Aggregation of microscopic particles diffusing in a fluid medium represents a common process leading to fractal structures. If the density of the initially randomly distributed particles is larger than zero, the probability for two "sticky" particles to collide and stick together is finite. It is typical for such systems that the resulting two-particle aggregate can diffuse further and may form larger fractal clusters by joining other aggregates. In the above process each cluster is equivalent with regard to the conditions for their motion, i. e., there is no seed particle as in the case of DLA. Consequently, this process is called cluster-cluster aggregation(CCA) to distinguish it from particle-cluster aggregation(CCA) to distinguish it from particle-cluster aggregation phenomena. 1, record 17, English, - cluster%2Dcluster%20aggregation

It is generally found that natural objects possess self-similarity and self-affinity in their structures. Fractal analysis, a technique based on these properties, has been widely used in various research applications. In the active remote sensing of the earth terrain, it is possible to extract this fractal information from the images obtained. In this application, fractal surface dimension, an important parameter in fractal analysis, can be employed as an additional feature to classify different landuse areas. This fractal surface dimension is generally related to the roughness of the surface. By keeping the x and y coordinates of the pixels of the image, and taking the grey level of each pixel as its z coordinate, a three-dimensional surface can be constructed. The calculation of fractal surface dimension can then be carried out on that surface. 2, record 23, English, - fractal%20analysis

3, record 23, French, - analyse%20fractale

In summary, the Cauchy motion is the map on a Brownian motion of a linear Lévy dust. Recalling that decimation was the Romans’ charming way of punishing a hostile group by killing every tenth member, we see that Cauchy motion is obtained by a fractal form of decimation. Scientists began to apply formalisms of chaos to research in artificial intelligence. The dynamics of systems wandering between basins of attraction appealed to those looking for a way to model symbols and memories. A physicist thinking of "ideas" as regions with fuzzy boundaries, separate yet overlapping, pulling like magnets and yet letting go, would naturally turn to the image of a phase-space with basins of attraction. Such models seem to have the right features : points of stability mixed with instability, and regions with changeable boundaries. Their fractal structure offers the kind of infinitely self-referential quality that seems so central to the mind's ability to bloom with ideas, decisions, emotions, and all other artifacts of consciousness. 7, record 45, English, - attraction%20pool

Video compression ratios available from various vendors of full-motion video boards range up to 160 : 1 and perform adequately on standalone multimedia desktop platforms transmitting image data from CD-ROM or videodisk peripherals. However, these compression ratios will not be sufficient for effective transmission of complex videos and renderings that are being produced by engineering designers or even simpler videos in highly interactive multiuser networked environments. The solution, however, is already on the horizon in the form of fractional dimensional compression techniques(fractals) that can reach astonishing compression ratios of 10, 000 : 1. This is possible because fractals, despite their apparent complexity, have a very low information content and can be specified as relatively simple expressions. Fractal compression is obtained via mathematical functions that describe a sequence of transformations of an image and when applied repeatedly, converge on a unique fractal. Fractal compression algorithms can be incorporated in software or VLSI microchips and, if applied to a typical CD-ROM disk, should provide nearly seven hours of full-motion. 2, record 55, English, - fractal%20compression

The notion of fractal dimension provides a numerical measure of the wiggliness of a curve or the roughness of a surface. It fits within the intuitive idea that a crinkly curve somehow covers more of a given area than a smooth curve and that a rough surface fills more space than a smooth one. Beyond that, a fractal dimension is a way of expressing the fact that a fractal is self-similar, or contains copies of itself. It reflects the relationship between the whole and its parts. 3, record 89, English, - fractal%20dimension

Menger's triadic fractal sponge. Karl Menger selects a different trema, shaped like a cross with spikes front and back, consisting of N=20 subcubes of side 1/3, connected to one another. Among them, 12 form "rods" or ropes, and the remaining 8 are knots, connectors, or ties.(...) I call it a sponge, because both the curd and the whey are connected sets. 2, record 99, English, - fractal%20sponge

In the real world there are, of course, no ordered fractals. Structures such as coastlines, trees, rivers, clouds, blood vessels, lightning bolts, paths of particles in Brownian motion and thousands of other fractal-like phenomena are imperfect models that are(within certain upper and lower bounds) fractals in a statistical sense [...] Such fractals are called random fractals or statistical fractals. Coastlines, for instance, have fractal dimensions that change from coast to coast. Investigations show that they fall within a range of 1. 15 to 1. 25, the second number measuring the complexity of the west coast of England. 1, record 100, English, - random%20fractal
