The appearance of qualitatively different solutions to a nonlinear equation as a parameter in the equation is varied.

Qualitative change of the solution to an equation or a system at a fixed value - called critical value - of a parameter.

CONT

A point in parameter space where such an event occurs is a bifurcation point. From a bifurcation point emerge two or more solution branches, either stable or unstable. The representation of any characteristic property of the solution as a function of the bifurcation parameter constitutes a bifurcation diagram (tree).

Terme introduit par Henri Poincaré au début du siècle dans ses travaux sur les systèmes d'équations différentielles. Lorsqu'on crée des tourbillons dans un fluide, on observe une «bifurcation» de l'état de repos du fluide vers l'état convectif.

The fractal structure obtained by a growth process that starts with a single seed particle placed onto a site of a lattice. Its neighbouring sites are considered live if they may become occupied. Next, one of these live sites is chosen randomly and either filled with a particle or killed for the rest of time. The filled site becomes part of the growing cluster and its new neighbours become living sites. A cluster is grown by repeating the same procedure many times.

Lefèvre (1983) et ses collaborateurs ont proposé un remarquable modèle du lit vasculaire pulmonaire, basé sur des arbres fractals et une fonction de coût. Des arborisations symétriques et asymétriques ont été explorées. Les auteurs définissent des arbres «consistants» à partir de Fredberg et Honing (1978). L'arbre consistant asymétrique le plus simple correspond à un arbre Fibonaccien.

Les courbes irrégulières de von Koch-Mandelbrot prennent des formes telles le corail et la forêt. Les courbes hyperboliques produisent des formes appelées «sapin hyperbolique» et «Tour Eiffel russe». Quant aux «arbres hiérarchiques» ou de classement, les plus simples servent à la modélisation de phénomènes tels la distribution des revenus salariaux, tandis que les plus complexes - tels les «arbres lexicographiques» de Zipf-Mandelbrot sur la distribution des fréquences des mots - illustrent des phénomènes plus abstraits.

In a phase space, the set of initial conditions giving rise to trajectories converging towards the attractor.

Scientists began to apply formalisms of chaos to research in artificial intelligence. The dynamics of systems wandering between basins of attraction appealed to those looking for a way to model symbols and memories. A physicist thinking of "ideas" as regions with fuzzy boundaries, separate yet overlapping, pulling like magnets and yet letting go, would naturally turn to the image of a phase-space with basins of attraction. Such models seem to have the right features : points of stability mixed with instability, and regions with changeable boundaries. Their fractal structure offers the kind of infinitely self-referential quality that seems so central to the mind's ability to bloom with ideas, decisions, emotions, and all other artifacts of consciousness.

Cirriform fractals. Clearly, a cirriform structure can, but need not, be present in a nonrandom fractal dust. It is absent from the Fournier model... which generates a collection of "lumps". By contrast, cirri are readily created by taking a Sierpinski carpet... and disconnecting its generator without brutality. Since the resulting fractal' s dimension can take essentially any value, we have made the important point that being cirriform is not a matter of dimension. Nevertheless, specifically built-in nonrandom cirri are too artificial to warrant attention.
