The appearance of qualitatively different solutions to a nonlinear equation as a parameter in the equation is varied. 3, record 1, English, - bifurcation
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 DEF
Qualitative change of the solution to an equation or a system at a fixed value - called critical value - of a parameter. 4, record 1, English, - bifurcation
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
A point in parameter space where such an event occurs is a bifurcation point. From a bifurcation point emerge two or more solution branches, either stable or unstable. The representation of any characteristic property of the solution as a function of the bifurcation parameter constitutes a bifurcation diagram (tree). 4, record 1, English, - bifurcation

Fractal Image Compression is about the mathematical ideas that lie behind the photographs and other pictures on Encarta. They are all fractals! They are stored as highly compressed data files produced using fractal image compression. Fractal image compression involves three basic mathematical modeling problems. The required models are [:] a mathematical model for real world image, a model for approximating model images by means of resolution independent image approximants, which must be described by finite data strings, and a computationally tractable model for the sources of the data strings, to enable the application of information theory to provide efficient representation of the image approximants. 2, record 2, English, - fractal%20image%20compression

1, record 2, French, - compression%20fractale%20d%27images

Following up the twenty year old work of M. E. Fisher, it was shown(SC, SK) that for anisotropic two-dimensional lattices there can be two-dimensional distributions of zeros. Shortly before this, B. Derrida, L. DeSeze, and C. Itzykson found fractal patterns in so-called hierarchical lattices. The particular attraction of this discovery was that it used renormalization theory in an essential way, described in detail in the following section. 1, record 3, English, - hierarchical%20lattice

Nottale proposes an extension of the principle of relativity upon which the setting of a spatio-temporal theory of microphysics could be founded. He shows that some of the main properties of the quantum world, i. e. the Heisenberg uncertainty relations, may be deduced from the geometric structures of a new space-time whose metrics would depend on spatio-temporal resolutions. The theory may be worked out due to the introduction of a new mathematical tool, the fractal derivative, which allows one to connect the concepts of presence probability and metric potentials. 1, record 4, English, - fractal%20derivative
