The Protocol Concerning Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife(the SPAW Protocol) has been internationally recognized as the most comprehensive treaty of its kind. Adopted in Kingston, Jamaica by the member governments of the Caribbean Environment Programme on 18 January 1990, the SPAW Protocol preceded other international environmental agreements in utilizing an ecosystem approach to conservation. The Protocol acts as a vehicle to assist with regional implementation of the broader and more demanding global Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD). The objective of the Protocol is to protect rare and fragile ecosystems and habitats, thereby protecting the endangered and threatened species residing therein. The Caribbean Regional Co-ordinating Unit pursues this objective by assisting with the establishment and proper management of protected areas, by promoting sustainable management(and use) of species to prevent their endangerment and by providing assistance to the governments of the region in conserving their coastal ecosystems. 1, record 2, English, - Protocol%20Concerning%20Specially%20Protected%20Areas%20and%20Wildlife

The montane ecosystems : The information was compiled after a visit to several mountains in Africa.... The Montane Zones [are] Nival zone, 4300 m, Alpine zone, 3500 m, Health zone, 3000 m, Hagenia/Hypericum zone, 2800 m, Bamboo zone, 2400 m, Forest(Savannah) grassland. Characteristics : The soils are distinctly acidic. The humus in the soil is determined by the moistness of the mountain. The moister the mountain the more the humus. Where the soil water is close to the surface, there is more vegetation.... Plants are adapted to high radiation levels and low temperatures. During sunny weather the solar radiation is intense and may cause strong surface heating on the plants. It is a very fragile ecosystem whereby plants take a long time to grow because of the low temperatures and poor soils.... Another characteristic of the montane ecosystem is thin air. As one rises along the altitude, the air becomes less dense.... Montane ecosystems are high rainfall areas.... Low temperature as altitude increases is another characteristic of montane ecosystem. 1, record 3, English, - montane%20ecosystem

of the Canadian Wildlife Federation. Project WILD is based on the premise that young people and their teachers have a vital interest in learning about the earth as home for people and wildlife. We emphasize wildlife because of its intrinsic, ecological and other values, as well as its importance as a basis for understanding the fragile grounds upon which all life depends. In the face of pressures affecting the quality and sustainability of life on earth as we know it. Project WILD addresses the need for human beings to develop as responsible members of the ecosystem. 2, record 4, English, - Project%20WILD

2, record 4, French, - Atout%2DFaune

TC Aviation owns and operates a large number of sites, including some located on the fragile ecosystem of the north and on native lands. Our environmental responsibilities are not limited to the handling of toxic materials or the management of fuel storage tanks. CEPA(Canadian Environmental Protection Act) outlines responsibilities which transcend the boundaries of individual activities, making each one of us environmental stewards. This is particularly true for our frontline operators who must ensure that environmental problems are reported to the proper authorities. To assist the frontline officers, training will be provided in the near future. 1, record 5, English, - frontline%20officer
