The capital of the territory of Nunavut since its creation on April 1, 1999. It is located near the northeast head of Frobisher Bay on southern Baffin Island. Formerly called "Ikaluit, "it was previously incorporated as the "town of Frobisher Bay" in 1980 and renamed "Iqaluit" on January 1, 1987.
