FURROW IRRIGATION [8 records]

Record 1 2004-01-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
DEF

A method of applying irrigation water to fields or orchards by using small ditches or furrows which lead from the supply ditch.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Drainage et irrigation (Agriculture)
DEF

Record 2 2001-12-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
DEF

[A] system(drip, trickle, [or] micro sprinklers) [that] provides water in small volumes and generally provides water to plants with less waste than furrow irrigation.

CONT

A micro irrigation system delivers water to the crop using a network of mainlines, sub-mains and lateral lines with emission points spaced along their lengths.

CONT

Drip and trickle systems apply water through small holes in small diameter tubes placed on or below the surface of the field. Another type of system, micro sprinklers, supplies water from low-volume sprinkler heads located above the surface. Low flow systems are expensive and their use is generally limited to high-value crops such as vegetables, fruits, and vineyards.

Key term(s)
  • microirrigation
  • low volume irrigation
  • low pressure irrigation
  • low-flow system
  • low flow irrigation system

French

Domaine(s)
  • Drainage et irrigation (Agriculture)
CONT

Key term(s)
  • système de micro-irrigation localisée
  • système de microirrigation
  • système de micro irrigation

Record 3 2001-11-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
CONT

The authors also stated that the alluvial plains of the Ganges-Brahmaputra basin hold the world’s largest reserve of fresh, annually replenished groundwater. The cost of tube-well irrigation is around a $1000/hectare irrigated, which is a third of the cost of surface gravity irrigation and about twice as productive.

OBS

There are basically 3 types of irrigation methods : Surface irrigation-Gravity system. Sprinkler irrigation-Pressurized system. Drip irrigation-Pressurized system. Surface Irrigation. Surface/gravity irrigation is characterized by the movement of water across the surface of the irrigated field. A distinction is made between the 2 main surface methods : a) Flood irrigation. b) Furrow irrigation. Surface irrigation is not economical with water, cannot be used in slope areas, not suitable for some crops and requires much labour. The overall irrigation efficiency in surface irrigation is not more that 45%-55%.

OBS

Surface irrigation: Broad class of irrigation methods in which water is distributed over the soil surface by gravity flow.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Drainage et irrigation (Agriculture)
CONT

Record 4 2001-10-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
  • Irrigation (Civil Engineering)
DEF

All of the equipment required to apply water to a given area, from the source of water supplying the system, to the revolving sprinkler, nozzles or perforated pipe.

CONT

A sprinkler system consists of pipelines which carry water under pressure from a pump or elevated source to lateral lines along which sprinkler heads are spaced to appropriate intervals.

CONT

Sprinkler systems are used mostly where the land has an irregular surface and is difficult to irrigate by flooding or furrow irrigation.

  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
  • Irrigation (Civil Engineering)
CONT

The maximum allowable furrow flows are also the same, 1. 768 m3/min. A rule-of-thumb states that the advance time for reuse systems should be about 30 percent of the required intake opportunity time. From Figure 56, the first irrigation flow should be. 082 m3/min...

  • Drainage et irrigation (Agriculture)
  • Irrigation (Génie civil)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Horticulture
  • Farming Techniques
  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
DEF

A modified furrow method of irrigation of field crops wherein the water flows in shallow furrows called corrugations; adapted to rough land with slopes up to 10 or 15 percent.

French

  • Horticulture
  • Techniques agricoles
  • Drainage et irrigation (Agriculture)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Tillage Operations (Agriculture)
  • Plant and Crop Production
DEF

A narrow flat-topped ridge on which crops are grown with a furrow on each side for drainage of excess water.

OBS

It is customary to use ridges for planting crops which are to be irrigated(by furrow or channel irrigation) but narrow raised beds are also suitable. The water is directed along the narrow pathways and will penetrate to the root area of the plant by lateral movement.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Travaux du sol (Agriculture)
  • Cultures (Agriculture)
DEF
