Those who recorded the period of the fur trade in writing noted a distinction which still exists today between Crees of the coast(Coasters) and Crees from the interior(Inlanders). The main activity of the coastal Crees was goose hunting; their hunting and trapping territories were not very far away and did not require the use of a canoe... The inland Crees, more numerous than those of the coast and occupying the land at a distance from the coast, only came to the post once a year to exchange their furs; they were the main suppliers of pelts. 1, record 8, English, - Cree%20of%20the%20coast

There are four ways to express an indigenous collectivity in English: 1) with the plural inflection "-s"; 2) if the collectivity does not apply to a subgroup, with the use of the term "nation", as in the Cree nation; 3) with the use of the word "people", as in the Huron and Cree peoples; 4) with the use of the definite article, e.g. The Cree of the coast make up the aboriginal nation occupying the Haute-Mauricie region. Since the "-s" is redundant, this author prefers the use of the definite article (e.g. the Cree, the Haida, etc.). The trading posts intensified the settling process of the Amerindians who spent more and more time there as their dependency on goods offered by the employees in exchange for furs increased... Contact Period in the Champlain Valley(1609-1664 AD)... 1609 the Mahican living in the Hudson Valley came in contact with Dutch explorer Henry Hudson. Shortly thereafter, the Dutch began to trade metal tools to the Mahican in exchange for furs. The Mahican also developed alliances with the French. When the English captured New Amsterdam in 1664, a region which included much of the Mahican's traditional territory, the Mahican were forced to develop alliances with the British. By 1700 the Mahican population had been decreased from an estimated 4, 000 to about 500 through European diseases, famine, wars, and political pressures. Many of the Mahican merged with other groups, including the Dutch, the Western Abenaki, the French, and the Mohawk Iroquois. By 1720 the Mahican no longer existed as an organized native tribe in the Champlain and Hudson Valleys. The influx of Europeans to the Northeast caused great upheaval among the region's Native American populations. Disease, confusing political and economic relations, and continuous warfare split native communities apart and forced them to join outlying groups.... 2, record 17, English, - contact%20period

Until this decade, Canadian economists and officials have been content to explain regional decline and fall on the basis of the "staple theory".... According to this approach, regions rise, and draw in new population and capital, when new locally-oriented products(such as furs, wheat, pulp) gain access to the world market. These regions later decline when these raw materials are depleted, their markets disappear, or improved competing sources can sell in world markets at lower prices. 1, record 61, English, - staple%20theory
