FUSAIN [8 records]

Record 1 2022-10-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Solid Fossil Fuels
  • Lignite, Graphite and Coal Mining
DEF

A black, friable band in bituminous coal, characterized by a fibrous structure and silky luster.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Combustibles fossiles solides

Record 2 2017-05-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
DEF

A petrographic entity, recognizable visually as a band or layer of coal that has distinctive physical appearance and characteristic microstructural features from coal to coal.

CONT

Thiessen recognized three components of banded bituminous coals-anthraxylon, attritus, and fusain.

OBS

The term component is somewhat comparable with the term microlithotype of the Stopes-Heerlem Nomenclature.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétrographie
DEF

Record 3 2012-03-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Origins and Composition of Coal
  • Classification of Coal
DEF

Macroscopic coal constituent (lithotype) that is hard and dull gray in color.

CONT

Banded coals grade from dull banded("splint coal") to bright banded, depending on whether dull bands or bright bands are dominant. The bands are divided into four major lithotypes : durain(dull, grainy texture, tough), fusain(dull black, charcoal texture, hands get dirty), clarain(bright, satiny texture, brittle), and vitrain(bright, black, glassy, brittle).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Origine et constitution des charbons
  • Classification des charbons
CONT

Record 4 2012-03-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Classification of Coal
  • Characteristics of Coal
DEF

Coal that absorbs rather than reflects light, containing mostly durain and fusain lithotypes.

OBS

An early division was into three types : bright coal, dull coal and mineral charcoal(or mother of coal). Another system [divided coal into] four types :fusain, durain, clarain, and vitrain. This coincided with the classification put forward by... the United States Bureau of Mines where coal is divided into anthraxylon-bright layers of plant material and attrius-darker debris material. Today coal classification is based on the organic material seen using different optical microscopic techniques. There are three main groups : liptinite(or exinite), vitrinite and inertinite with many further divisions [within these three groups].

French

Domaine(s)
  • Classification des charbons
  • Caractéristiques des charbons
DEF

Record 5 2011-02-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Classification of Coal
DEF

The common variety of bituminous and subbituminous coal [which] consists of a sequence of irregularly alternating layers or lenses of homogeneous black material having a brilliant vitreous luster, grayish-black, less brilliant, striated material usually of silky luster, and generally, thinner bands or lenses of soft, powdery, and fibrous particles of mineral charcoal.

CONT

[Banded and nonbanded coals] are further subdivised into bright coal, semisplint(semibright) coal, and splint(dull) coal for banded coal; cannel and boghead coal for nonbanded coal; or the lithotypes vitrain, attrital coal(clarain, durain), and fusain.

OBS

The difference in luster of the bands is greater in bituminous than in subbituminous coal.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Classification des charbons
DEF
