En nomenclature, trois types de fusion sont connus : L'ortho-fusion et l'ortho- et péri-fusion, formant des systèmes polycycliques fusionnés ayant deux ou plus atomes en commun, et la spiro-fusion, qui engendre des composés spiraniques ayant un seul atome en commun.
