A wing spar, sometimes called a wing beam, is a principal spanwise member of the wing structure.

Spars are the principal structural members of the wing. They correspond to the longerons of the fuselage. They run parallel to the lateral axis, or toward the tip of the wing, and are usually attached to the fuselage by wing fittings, plain beams, or a truss system.

During flight, applied loads which are imposed on the wing structure are primarily on the skin. From the skin they are transmitted to the ribs and from the ribs to the spars. The spars support all distributed loads as well as concentrated weights, such as fuselage, landing gear, and, on multi-engine aircraft, the nacelles or pylons.

Les longerons d'une aile sont le plus souvent au nombre de deux; lorsqu'ils sont réunis par des panneaux matérialisant l'extrados et l'intrados du profil, ils constituent un longeron-caisson, très résistant en torsion et qui permet de loger directement le carburant dans des réservoirs dits structuraux. Hormis ce cas, les longerons d'une aile sont réunis par les nervures, qui déterminent son profil; ceux du fuselage sont réunis par les couples [...]

Les longerons [...] constituent les éléments longitudinaux de la voilure (sens de l'envergure) et ils supportent les efforts de flexion verticale. [Les] semelles travaillent surtout en traction et compression; [...] les âmes travaillent surtout au cisaillement. [...] Les longerons ont une section décroissante de l'emplanture à l'extrémité de l'aile en raison de la variation des efforts supportés.

Spars are the principal structural members of the wing. They correspond to the longerons of the fuselage. They run parallel to the lateral axis, or toward the tip of the wing, and are usually attached to the fuselage by wing fittings, plain beams, or a truss system. Wooden spars can be generally classified into four different types by their cross sectional configuration.... they may be partly hollow, in the shape of a box, solid or laminated, rectangular in shape, or in the form of an I-beam.... A box spar... is built up from plywood and solid spruce.

A good understanding of the basic axis system used to describe aircraft motion is necessary to fully appreciate flight test data, since all measurements are referenced to this axis system. Aircraft translational motion is described in terms of motion in three different directions, each direction being perpendicular to the other two(orthogonal). Motion in the X direction is forward and aft velocity. The Y direction produces sideways motion to the left and right, and up and down motion is in the Z direction... There are several slightly different versions of the basic axis system just described. They differ primarily in the exact placement of the zero reference lines, but are generally similar in their directions.(For example, the body-axis system uses the fuselage center line as the x axis, while a wind-axis system uses the direction that the aircraft is moving through the air as the x axis.)
