DEF

An aerodynamic fairing integrated to the fuselage (nacelle) or suspended under the wing (pod).

OBS

[A] "pod"... is mounted on a strut(pylon) which extends into the wing. The wing is reinforced at the point where the engine struts are attached. The structure employed to attach an engine nacelle or pod to a wing or fuselage may be referred to as a strut or a pylon [Boeing 747 jet airliner].

OBS

nacelle: term standardized by ISO.

OBS

nacelle; pod: terms officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

PHR

Pod cowling.

DEF

  • Landing Gear (Aeroindustry)
CONT

The MLG [main landing gear] retracts inwards into the fuselage wheel well. Each MLG has two doors. The outboard door is rigidly attached at the strut. The inboard door operates by mechanical linkage to the strut and is held in up position by two uplock cylinders. This uplock is released when landing gear lever is placed in down position by hydraulic pressure, or by nitrogen pressure in emergency. The MLG is held, while airborne, in retracted position by hydraulic pressure in the actuator and by the inboard door mechanical uplock, if pressure drops. As the gear is extended, an internal lock in the actuator automatically locks it in fully extended positions.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Propulsion Systems
CONT

The reverse thrust system provides means of decelerating aircraft during the landing roll, thus reducing landing roll length. The thrust reverser units are attached at the turbine outlet case of each engine. The clamshell door type thrust reverser provides reversal of thrust by blocking the engine exhaust gas and fan air flow and deflecting the gasses through openings made by repositioned defector doors or by fixed cascade vane openings depending on the type of reverser mechanism. Exhaust gases of the centre engine are deflected forward and out of the sides of the aft fuselage, and on strut mounted engines gases are deflected above and below the engine in a forward direction.

CONT

Move fuselage dolly into position and secure by inserting pins from inside the cockpit.

CONT

Assembling the glider out of its trailer, it is important to ensure there is enough clearance under the wheel to allow full extension before it touches the ground. Otherwise the strut will not lock over center and the gear will collapse when the glider is taken off the fuselage dolly.

Record 6 1988-03-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Landing Gear (Aeroindustry)
CONT

The system is based on a special landing gear called a jump strut, which works by giving the aircraft the proper attitude for take-off,.... First, the system extends the nose gear, raising the nose. A few milliseconds later, the main gear is activated(’jumps’) in its turn, increasing the distance between wheels and fuselage, while rotation continues. After a vertical leap of some 6ft, the aircraft slows and descends slightly because of the increased drag at the higher angle of attack. Finally, and virtually without a pause, the aircraft resumes its climb.... The jump strut is extended under pilot control by a nitrogen-charged actuator. Once fired, it is immediately vented to atmosphere to enable the gear to resume its normal shock-attenuating function should the take-off run have to be aborted.

CONT

The split axle type has the axle bent upwards and split in the centre to enable it to clear obstructions on the ground. This type is used on airplanes such as the Piper PA-22. It is suspended on shock cords wound around a fuselage member which enables the whole assembly to spread when the loads come on it. A strut or tie rod is usually incorporated to brace the structure against side loads.
