Unless the tiebreaker rule applies, a game, match, meet, contest, event or combat at the end of which both teams or opponents have the same score (a tie) or an equal number of points, both ending the match after having produced the same number of points, having crossed the finish line at the same moment, or their performance being considered, judged or clocked the same.

The noun "tie" is used alone or in apposition with another noun : tie game, tie match, tie contest. The same expressions can be built with "tied, "the past participle of the verb "to tie" :tied game, tied match, tied contest.

even match: a familiar expression to mean that the match is at a tie, both sides having the same number of points or the same record, as compared to "odd match" meaning that the figures are not the same.

A 10-minute period played after the end of regulation play in any tied game in certain leagues and only in championship playoff games in other leagues.

OBS

The overtime is sudden death with the first team to score a goal winning. When the league rules do not permit more than one overtime period(as in college play), the game is left as a tie if the teams are still tied at the end of the extra period.

In the National Hockey League, overtime, during the regular season, is a 5-minute period after which the game is left as a tie; but, during the Stanley Cup Series, there are as many overtime periods as necessary to break the tie.

"Overtime" and "sudden death" are not synonyms.

During regular-season games, if the game remains tied at the end of the five(5) minute overtime period, the teams will proceed to a shootout.... The home team shall have the choice of shooting first or second. The teams shall alternate shots. Three(3) players from each team shall participate in the shootout and they shall proceed in such order as the coach selects.... Each team will be given three shots, unless the outcome is determined earlier in the shootout. After each team has taken three shots, if the score remains tied, the shootout will proceed to a "sudden death" format. No player may shoot twice until everyone who is eligible has shot.
