GAMMA DISTRIBUTION [7 records]

Record 1 2013-06-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Instruments
  • Electromagnetic Radiation
  • Remote Sensing
  • Cartography
DEF

An instrument for determining the energy distribution of gamma rays.

CONT

Gamma rays are electromagnetic radiation at the short-wavelength, or high-frequency, end of the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum, which ranges from gamma rays (short) to radio (long). The study and analysis of gamma-ray spectra for scientific and technical use is called gamma spectroscopy, and gamma-ray spectrometers are the instruments which observe and collect such data. Because the energy of each photon of EM radiation is proportional to its frequency, gamma rays have sufficient energy that they are typically observed by counting individual photons.

OBS

The gamma-ray spectrometer is used for detecting iron, magnesium titanium, thorium and potassium. It is also used for identifying samples of unknown composition.

OBS

gamma ray spectrometer: term standardized by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

DEF

Record 2 2012-01-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radiography (Medicine)
DEF

The process of producing a scintigram.

CONT

In isotope scanning, radioactive isotopes are introduced into the body and their distribution is then determined by observations of their radioaction.... [The] isotopes... are usually emitters of gamma rays only.... The radiation emitted is detected by a scintillation counter, which is moved to and fro over the organ... being scanned; these messages can then be electronically recorded as marks on paper or as a photographic image.

OBS

A radioisotope is a specific type of radioactive substance; a radioisotope is a radioactive isotope of an element. Its unstable atomic nucleus undergoes radioactive decay and emits alpha, beta or gamma rays. Most isotopes however are emitters of gamma rays only. Since a radioisotope is a specific type of radioactive substance, radioisotope scanning is specific with respect to radioactive scanning (in French, scintigraphie).

Domaine(s)
  • Radiographie (Médecine)
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
  • Waste Management
CONT

Gamma irradiating packages. Some packages generated by COGEMA at the La Hague fuel reprocessing plant contain radioactive waste with significant gamma radiation levels... [Modifications] primarily consisted of using an offset cab for the disposal operator, and controlling the distribution of irradiating packages in the structure.

Domaine(s)
  • Déchets nucléaires
  • Gestion des déchets
CONT
