The light is made of particles(photons) but is also a wave. Therefore, there are different kinds of electromagnetic radiation : infrared, radio waves, microwaves, gamma rays, X rays, etc. Only a small fraction can be detected by the human eye : the visible light--what in everyday-life is referred to simply as ’light’. After the depleted fuel assemblies are removed from the reactor, they are placed in a canister … The canister alone, however, is not sufficient to provide adequate gamma or neutron radiation shielding. Therefore, apparatus that provide additional radiation shielding are required during transport, preparation and subsequent dry storage … The additional shielding is achieved by placing the canisters within large cylindrical containers called casks. Casks are typically designed to shield the environment from the dangerous radiation in two ways. First, shielding of gamma radiation requires large amounts of mass. Gamma rays are best absorbed by materials with a high atomic number and a high density, such as concrete, lead, and steel. The greater the density and thickness of the blocking material, the better the absorption/shielding of the gamma radiation. 1, record 17, English, - blocking%20material

Decay is associated with the loss of the radioactive isotope and the formation of another isotope of the same element but of lower mass, or the formation of one or more different elements. The word radiation is commonly used in several distinct although related senses.-First, it is a term for the process by which energy is transferred and is able to exert an effect at a distance without the need for any physical connection between source and receiver. In this broad sense, radiation includes energy transfer both by electromagnetic waves(as in the case of gamma rays, ultra-violet rays or radio waves) and by energetic particles(such as alpha or beta particles emitted from nuclei in the process of radioactive decay). The more precise terms "electromagnetic radiation" and "particulate radiation" differentiate between these two phenomena. 2, record 32, English, - corpuscular%20radiation

5, record 32, French, - rayonnement%20corpusculaire

The word radiation is commonly used in several distinct although related senses. First, it is a term for the process by which energy is transferred and is able to exert an effect at a distance without the need for any physical connection between source and receiver. 4, record 36, English, - electromagnetic%20radiation

Thorium(chemical symbol Th) is a naturally-occurring radioactive metal found at very low levels in soil, rocks, and water. It has several different isotopes, both natural and man-made, all of which are radioactive. The most common form of thorium is thorium-232, found naturally.... Thorium-232 has a half-life of 14 billion(14 x 109) years, and decays by alpha emission, with accompanying gamma radiation. Thorium-232 is the top of a long decay series that contains key radionuclides such as radium-228, its direct decay product, and radon-220.... 2, record 63, French, - dose%20dans%20l%27air

Blood irradiator BI-2000. Applications : Irradiation of blood & blood products by gamma rays is a proven and safe method to inhibit T-Lymphocyte proliferation and eliminate the risk of post transfusion graft versus host disease(T-GVHD). Gamma irradiation of cellular blood components is the best current technology to reduce the risk of T-GVHD to the recipients as confirmed by research and therefore being widely practiced world over in hospitals and blood banks as a life saving approach to this problem. Blood is usually irradiated in standard blood bags in dedicated blood irradiators using cobalt-60 or caesium-137 radioactive source. The usual recommended radiation doses are 25 Gy to 35 Gy(1 Gy=100 rad) for this purposes. 2, record 85, English, - blood%20irradiator

3, record 87, French, - rayon%20gamma

The method by which incident radiation interacts with the medium to cause ionization may be direct or indirect. Electromagnetic radiations(X rays and gamma photons) are indirectly ionizing; that is, they give up their energy in various interactions with cellular molecules, and the energy is then utilized to produce a fast-moving charged particle such as an electron. It is the electron that then secondarily may react with a target molecule. Charged particles, in contrast, strike the tissue or medium and directly react with target molecules, such as oxygen or water. These particulate radiations are directly ionizing radiations. 1, record 93, English, - gamma%20photon
