Because we are more accustomed to recognizing and accepting objects with equally distributed parts on a vertical axis, we identify this visual satisfaction as balance. When both sides of an axis are mirror images of each other, they are in symmetry, a landscape formula used for generations in so-called formal garden layouts. Its opposite is asymmetry (or occult balance) and provides us with the design term "informal". Either can be visually agreeable as long as each is suitable for the total landscape development. 1, record 1, English, - garden%20layout

2, record 1, French, - trac%C3%A9%20du%20jardin

Located between the Place de la Concorde and the Louvre, the Jardin des Tuileries and the Jardin du Carrousel date back to the construction of the Tuileries palace for Catherine de Médicis in 1564. A century later Le Nôtre elaborated on the layout to create a perfect example of the French formal garden. The Jardin des Tuileries was a public strolling spot for XVIIIth century high society and remained open to the public through the XIXth century, while the area closest to the palace, soon renamed the Jardin du Carrousel, became part of the sovereign's residence. 1, record 3, English, - French%20formal%20garden

2, record 3, French, - jardin%20%C3%A0%20la%20fran%C3%A7aise
