Les bordures servent à séparer des espaces ayant des fonctions différentes (un stationnement d'un sentier pédestre) ou à limiter des matériaux, des textures, définir des transitions, les lignes particulières d'un design ou encore diriger les eaux de drainage. Elles minimisent [sic : réduisent] aussi l'entretien en empêchant les matériaux granulaires de déborder sur les pelouses. Mais les bordures sont surtout utiles et nécessaires au maintien et à la stabilité de certains pavages tels que l'asphalte et les dallages non cimentés.

Reel mowers stir up dust and debris the least, so they’re best for allergy sufferers .... They work fine for flat edging, but if your lawn edging is raised, you’ll end up with a lot of trimming since reel mowers can’t cut very close to walls.

Dressées en bordure, elles pourraient blesser les enfants ou toute autre personne chutant sur la bordure. On peut aussi créer une bordure plate en alignant à plat des pierres, des briques ou tout autre matériau d'extérieur. Ce genre de bordure facilite le passage de la tondeuse puisque l'on peut rouler dessus pour couper la pelouse.

Bordure barrière en saillie, c'est-à-dire bordure qui dépasse par rapport au sol, par opposition avec les bordures plates (à niveau avec la terre) et avec les bordures enterrées.

Laisser un peu pousser le gazon par temps sec permet également de moins l'arroser. Enfin, supprimer les bordures saillantes des plates-bandes qui empêchent l'eau de ruisseler vers les plantations.
