Beneficial insects support biodiversity, the foundation for the world's ecological balance. An insect hotel in your garden will attract these beneficial insects, offering them a space where they can propagate and hunker down for the winter. Encouraging biodiversity in the garden helps to increase ecosystem productivity.

CONT

Un hôtel à insectes pour son jardin. [...]

A view is a scene observed from a given vantage point... A view must be analyzed and composed with keenly perceptive artistry to utilize even a fraction of the full dramatic potential. Like other landscape features, the view by its handling may be preserved, neutralized, modified, or accentuated... A view is a picture to be framed, an evolving panorama of many blending facets. A view is a theme... A view is a constantly changing mood conveyed by association, light, and color. A view is a limit of visual space. It transcends the boundaries of the site... A view is a backdrop. It may serve as the wall of a garden or as a mural in a room. A view is the setting for architecture.

CONT

(Heeling in) is a procedure designed to keep alive and in the best possible condition bare-root plants dug for transplanting that cannot be planted immediately. ... It is done by digging a trench or ditch of sufficient size to accommodate the roots of plants laid as closely together as practicable without breaking, or bunching the roots to the extent that soil filled in will not be in contact with them.

CONT

Water your heeling trenches thoroughly, immediately before setting your plants into this temporary home. Cut off any roots which were damaged in the moving process, and then you can set each plant into the trench, allowing a small space between each rootball. Mix moist peat moss or wood shavings with the native soil to increase the water retention capabilities of the soil. Using this mixture, work the soil in among the roots, and cover the entire root ball slightly deeper than at the depth it was previously covered. Water again, thoroughly. Be sure to water this holding area regularly, but do not feed the plants. This method should keep your plants alive for 6 months or longer, until you are ready to set them into their permanent garden home.

DEF

A plant that grows well in container either from seed as a starting point during winter or for inexperienced urban gardeners who have limited or no garden space.

CONT

It is possible to run a tree nursery by growing seedlings of many species in containers, In large commercial nurseries, container-grown stock often include evergreens such as holly and yew, and ornamental trees such as garden cultivars of native species. Containerised plants do not have a large root-ball, and, with the exception of evergreens, should be treated as for bare-rooted stock and planted only in the dormant season.

CONT

Conteneurs.

CONT

To help turn Colonial Williamsburg into a collection of "green garden rooms, "architects used the subtle palette of evergreens, including edging boxwood, tree boxwood, bayberry, native yaupon holly, and the prickly American holly. The variations in their greens and their lusters contribute to the subtle combination of color and texture seen here at the Greenhow Tenement. The encircling green space is one of the most elegant in the city and provides for a very intimate sensory experience...

The Halifax Public Gardens are more than an open space or park. They are a rare example of a formal Victorian public garden surviving intact and relatively unspoiled in the heart of a modern city. Officially opened in 1867 The Halifax Public Gardens have survived for more than a century. Thanks to a series of talented and dedicated superintendents they have been little altered and still retain much of their original Victorian character.

The modern garden prototype emerged out of a changed conception of what a garden should be.... It is typically small and enclosed by fences or walls, frequently confined to the back of the lot, the front being occupied with garage, guest parking and entry. The entire garden space is divided according to uses and the outdoor areas are connected by doors to the rooms of the house, e. g., kitchen to herbs, vegetables, garbage, and storage, living room to terrace and barbecue. It is used intensively for outdoor recreation, games, sunbathing, swimming, eating and drinking. Privacy is desirable. This garden type seems to represent the ideal for people of all income groups in many parts of the world today.

CONT

Shrubs and vines ... often form the largest part of modern gardens since their cultivation requires less labour than that of herbaceous plants, and some flowering shrubs have extended blooming periods.
