The fashion trend of the day was for the ladies to line their grey cloaks with red velvet, the colours of the British military uniform. In a show of force, [Captain Jonathan] Prescott assembled the women and had them reverse their cloaks and hold their brooms so as the broom handles looked like musket barrels as they marched on the grounds of Capt. Prescott's house. The privateer's thought it was a garrison of British soldiers and wasted no time in hightailing it out of the harbour in their three ships. 1, record 2, English, - Turncoat%20Victory%20re%2Denactment

1, record 2, French, - reconstitution%20de%20la%20victoire%20des%20Turncoats

British planning for the postwar period included a para-military force to police the conquered Boer republics. This resulted in the creation of the South African Constabulary(SAC). In August 1900, two months after the fall of Pretoria, Major-General Robert Baden-Powell, famous as the leader of the besieged garrison of Mafeking, was appointed to raise and command the new force. In retrospect, British hopes that the 8, 500-strong constabulary could assume responsibility for pacifying the countryside were hopelessly optimistic. The Boers continued to fight on following the capture of their capitals, contrary to the expectations of the British high command. 1, record 3, English, - South%20African%20Constabulary

1, record 3, French, - South%20African%20Constabulary
