[An] international organization founded by the World Federation of Diamond Bourses(WFDB) and the International Diamond Manufacturers’ Association(IDMA) in 1975 to establish uniform rules for diamond grading and nomenclature. In 1978, the organization established the IDC Rules for grading polished diamonds, a system used by the Hoge Raad voor Diamant of Antwerp, the Swedish National Testing Institute, the Jewellery Council of South Africa, the Diamant Prüflabor of Idar-Oberstein, Germany, and the Central Gem Laboratory of Japan.

Synthetic diamond. A man-made diamond, produced either by subjecting carbon-bearing material such as graphite to high temperature and pressure or by the chemical vapor deposition(CVD) method. The Swedish company Allmana Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget(ASEA) is believed to have achieved the first repeatable synthesis of diamond in 1953, but their results were not published at the time; General Electric Company(GE) announced a successful synthesis of diamonds in 1954, followed by De Beers in 1959. Colors range from black to dark green, light green, red, yellow, blue, and colorless(Type IIa diamonds). Millions of carats of industrial-quality synthetic diamond are now manufactured annually using high pressure techniques; gem quality synthetic diamonds have been produced experimentally by De Beers Diamond Research Laboratories, General Electric Company...

One of ten sales scheduled each year at which the Central Selling Organization (CSO) offers rough diamonds to selected clients (who are, accordingly, called sightholders).

Euphemism employed by the Diamond Trading Company to describe the process by which a buyer is allowed to purchase a selection of rough diamonds that has been picked out for him by the De Beers affiliate in London. In recent times, 10 such sales have been held annually for some 220 invited customers(cutters and dealers). About 80% of the world's gem diamond rough has entered commerce in this manner.

The crisis of oversupply and weak demand of diamonds during the Great Depression led to the formation of the Central Selling Organization(CSO). The CSO is a group of companies associated with De Beers Consolidated Mines and De Beers Centenary AG to purchase, sort, evaluate, and market rough diamonds. Gem quality diamonds are sold through the Diamond Trading Company and industrial-grade material through De Beers Industrial Diamond Division. The CSO is also known as the Diamond Cartel.
