CONT

CONT

Scientists... hope that being able to study the entire genome sequence will help them understand how the genome as a whole works — how genes work together to direct the growth, development and maintenance of an entire organism. … The whole genome [cannot] be sequenced all at once because available methods of DNA [deoxyribonucleic acid] sequencing can only handle short stretches of DNA at a time. … scientists must break the genome into small pieces, sequence the pieces, and then reassemble them in the proper order to arrive at the sequence of the whole genome.

DEF

A chip of silicon or other solid material on which microscopic arrays of molecules such as DNA sections or polypeptides are mounted for simultaneous testing or analysis.

CONT

The completion of the sequencing of the human genome and that of many other organisms makes the determination of gene function an important... step in understanding the role of DNA in the processes of life. DNA microarrays are an excellent tool to address this question because their numerous probe sites enable the analysis of many genes simultaneously.

CONT

De novo sequencing refers to sequencing a novel genome where there is no reference sequence available for alignment. Sequence reads are assembled as contigs, and the coverage quality of de novo sequence data depends on the size and continuity of the contigs(i. e., the number of gaps in the data).

French

Domaine(s)

CONT

DEF

The study of the structure and function of genes.

OBS

Genomics, coined by Thomas Roderick in 1986, refers to a new scientific discipline of mapping, sequencing, and analyzing genomes. Genomics is now undergoing, however, a transition or expansion from the mapping and sequencing of genomes to an emphasis on genome function. To reflect this shift, genome analysis may now be divided into "structural genomics" and "functional genomics. "

Since the human genome project, genome sequencing techniques and bioinformatic capabilities have continued to rapidly advance to the point where it is now possible to examine whole communities of microbes extracted from their natural environments. Metagenomics studies are increasingly feasible, due to the capacity to process billions of DNA base pairs in a few days, generating gigabytes of data, in turn supported by the immense power of current computational infrastructure and software.

What is Post-Genomics Biology? In this era of whole-genome sequencing, the questions are changing-the driving force is no longer to clone and sequence genes in the random fashion that was available before, but rather to use the wealth of information available from the sequencing projects to understand gene function and gene product interactions at the physiological level. Do homologous proteins have homologous functions in different organisms? How do we use information from a 'simple’ organism to focus research in more complex ones? What do all these genes do that have not been seen using traditional methods? How can we understand the different roles of members of gene families which are only now appearing as a result of the genome sequencing projects?
