ST muscle fibers function primarily for endurance. They contract at relatively low speeds and are primarily used during typical low-to moderate-threshold endurance-type activities. Thses muscle fibers have the ability to use fat, glucose(glycogen), lactic acid and protein(to an extent) as their fuel sources. These fibers have a large number of mitochondria(fuel-processing plant) giving rise to their endurance nature. Slow-twitch fibers are recruited first, are relatively fatigue resistant, and have a relatively low force output per cross-sectional area... 3, record 7, English, - slow%2Dtwitch%20muscle%20fiber

Distinct polypeptide chain in which lies the domain accommodating the catalytic site of complex enzymes. It is completely separated from the domain building up the binding site for the regulatory effector(s). From an evolutionary viewpoint, it is probable that gene fusion did occur in most cases rather than that originally continuous polypeptide chains have separated. In some oligomeric enzymes the allosteric site may have appeared as a result of gene duplication, e. g. in glutamate dehydrogenase and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, whereas in others by acquisition of a foreign structural gene, e. g. the NAD-binding domain in glycogen phosphorylase. However, in present day complex enzymes the catalytic and regulatory protein units remained separate, but associable, entities. 2, record 11, English, - catalytic%20subunit

"The Wall. "It evades easy definition, but to borrow from Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's famous definition of obscenity, you know it when you see it-or rather, hit it. It usually happens around mile 20, give or take a couple of miles. Your pace slows, sometimes considerably. Some runners say that it feels as though their legs had been filled with lead quail shot... Others can’t feel their feet at all. Thought processes become a little fuzzy... Muscle coordination goes out the window, and self-doubt casts a deep shadow over the soul.... Even if you’re racing at a reasonable pace and you’ve done a good job of carboloading in the days before the marathon, you still have only about 2, 000 calories worth of glycogen stored in the muscles and liver; that's about enough to get you to-surprise!-mile 20. If you manage to deplete your glycogen reserves, say hello to The Wall. 3, record 15, English, - wall

1, record 27, French, - activation

The various chemical reactions involved in the conversion of dietary nutrients such as sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, and mineral elements into storage molecules such as triglycerides, glycogen, and proteins; into a large array of reaction intermediates such as glycoproteins, heteropolysaccharides, and phospholipids; or into special function molecules such as hormones, nucleotides, and vitamins. 1, record 28, English, - intermediary%20metabolism

The term intermediary metabolism is used to refer to those biochemical reactions occurring in cells by which the many biochemical intermediates are formed and/or transformed into other products necessary for life. Glycolysis, for example, produces glucose-6-phosphate, which can be transformed into ribose, glucuronate, glycerol, pyruvate, oxo-glutarate, glutamate, ascorbic acid, etc. To produce the large number of intermediates requires intertwined metabolic pathways, all carefully regulated by allosteric enzymes and hormones. 1, record 28, English, - intermediary%20metabolism

1, record 28, French, - m%C3%A9tabolisme%20interm%C3%A9diaire
