Therefore the different toxins are classified into three major groups, i. e. VFD=very fast death factor, operating within 3 min; the FDF=fast death factor, killing within 2 h; and the SDF=slow death factor causing death within 4–48 h.

Polarization of the radar signal is the orientation of the electromagnetic field and is a factor in the way in which the radar signal interacts with ground objects and the resulting energy reflected back. Most radar imaging sensors are designed to transmit microwave radiation either horizontally polarized(H) or vertically polarized(V), and receive either the horizontally or vertically polarized backscattered energy.

Polarimetric radars, like RADARDAT-2, are able to transmit and receive both horizontal and vertical polarizations. With this configuration, four linearly polarized signals are measured coherently in the scattering matrix: HH, HV, VH, and VV. Consequently, the user can derive additional information about the target to aid in the analysis.

Le REM [rayonnement électromagnétique] se caractérise [notamment] par [...] la polarisation, qui caractérise la variation du plan dans lequel oscille l'onde. Si cette variation est aléatoire, l'onde est dite non polarisée. Si ce plan reste fixe, la polarisation est dite rectiligne.

La polarisation représente la mesure de l'orientation du plan d'oscillation du signal radar, déterminée par l'antenne du radar. En effet, l'antenne d'un radar peut être ajustée de façon différente à l'émission et à la réception du signal. Les radars utilisés en télédétection sont habituellement conçus pour transmettre un signal polarisé soit horizontalement, soit verticalement. De même, le radar peut recevoir un signal polarisé dans le plan horizontal, dans le plan vertical ou encore dans les deux plans. On désigne habituellement le plan horizontal par la lettre H et le plan vertical par la lettre V. Une image radar peut donc représenter un signal HH (transmission horizontale, réception horizontale), VV (transmission verticale, réception verticale), HV (transmission horizontale, réception verticale) ou vice versa.

RADARSAT-2 est conçu pour transmettre alternativement un signal H et un signal V de même que pour recevoir simultanément ces signaux, créant ainsi des données polarimétriques. Cette particularité permet au capteur de générer des images dans une variété de polarisations (HH, VV, HV et VH). Les données radars en polarisation parallèle ou croisée présentent des caractéristiques spécifiques liées aux propriétés des surfaces observées. Il est donc possible d'accentuer certaines propriétés de surfaces, telles l'humidité ou la rugosité du sol, en choisissant la polarisation appropriée ou encore en combinant diverses polarisations.

The CargoLifter is an airship, which can carry up to 160t of freight like a crane. Goods up to the size of 12 x 5 x 5 m can be carried at a speed of 100 km/h. Maximum range is 10. 000 km.... The advantage of CargoLifter is, that transport can take place in rural areas with little or no infrastructure. Transport times are cut by a factor of 10 and the complexity of the project is reduced significantly.... The loading cycle will take about half a day to unload and 3/4 days to load. The CargoLifter can take 72 TEU in a box, but the weight volume ratio is very low(1 : 20). The weight alone would account for 136t or 85% of the payload. The remaining 44t can take 2800 cubic meters of space(weight to volume of 1 : 62).... CargoLifter will use marine diesel engines and propellers for thrust. Installed power is expected to be 9. 3 MW, for a top speed of 135 km/h. The average speed will be about 100 km/h, which requires about 5 MW and an hourly fuel consumption of 1 tonne(specific fuel burn approx. 200 g/kWh).

Les promoteurs du Cargolifter visent le transport de charges lourdes et volumineuses. [...] le dirigeable géant CL160 se veut une alternative au transport par bateau, trop lent, et au transport par avion, trop cher. [...] Parmi les avantages soulignés par son constructeur [Cargolifter AG], on peut citer la capacité du dirigeable à effectuer du transport «porte-à-porte» sans infrastructure particulière au sol. Un système de grue intégrée permettra de charger et de décharger tout en maintenant l'appareil à une centaine de mètres de hauteur. Le Cargolifter mesurera 240 m de long et 61 m de diamètre. Il pourra voler entre 80 et 100 km/h à des altitudes de l'ordre de 1,500 m, et sera capable d'emporter jusqu'à 160 tonnes. Sa «soute» offre 46 m de longueur, 7,5 m en largeur et autant en hauteur. Sa structure est de type semi-rigide. Le dirigeable, doté d'une quille rigide et rempli de plusieurs compartiments d'hélium, sera équipé de moteurs diesel entraînant les hélices orientables.

A very original set of experiments carried out by the Unit of Molecular Biology of Gene Expression concerns another protein essential for mouse development that is also a transcription factor. This factor known as KBF2 or RBP-Jk is homologous to a Drosophila gene product, Su(H)(Suppressor of Hairless), which belongs to the Notch signal transduction cascade involved in regulating the competence of a cell to respond to specific developmental cues. A likely function of the Su(H) protein is to serve as an anchor on DNA for non DNA-binding transcriptional activators. This function is conserved in the Notch pathway : the activation of this transmembrane receptor likely involves a proteolytic cleavage step which releases its intracellular domain; following nuclear translocation, it activates its target genes by binding to the Su(H) protein, which is already bound to several sites in the target promoters.
