The meter per second is the derived unit of speed in the International System of Units(SI). The meter per second(m/s) is equal to 3. 6 kilometers per hour(km/h), or about 2. 236936 miles per hour(mph), or 3. 28084 feet per second(ft/s), or 39. 370079 inches per second(in/s) or 1. 943844 knots(kn). The speed is the distance traveled by an object during a period of time. Thus, meters per second(meters/second) show how many meters are traveled in one second. The speed of light in a vacuum is an important physical constant denoted by the letter c for "constant" or the Latin word "celeritas" meaning "swiftness". It is the speed of all electromagnetic radiations, including visible light, in a vacuum. More generally, it is the speed of anything having zero rest mass.... In metric units, the speed of light is exactly 299, 792, 458 metres per second(1, 079, 252, 848. 8 km/h). The fundamental SI unit of length, the metre, has been defined since October 21, 1983, as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299, 792, 458 of a second; any increase in the precision of the measurement of the speed of light would refine the definition of the metre, but not alter the numerical value of c. The approximate value of 3x108 m/s is commonly used in rough estimates. In imperial units, the speed of light is about 670, 616, 629. 2 miles per hour or 983, 571, 056 feet per second, which is about 186, 282, 397 miles per second, or roughly one foot per nanosecond. The speed of light when it passes through a transparent or translucent material medium, like glass or air, is slower than its speed in a vacuum. The ratio of c to the observed phase velocity is called the refractive index of the medium. 5, record 11, English, - speed%20of%20light

The watt-hour(symbol W·h or Wh) is a unit of energy. It is most commonly used on household electricity meters in the form of the kilowatt-hour(kW·h or kWh), which is 1, 000 watt-hours. It is not used in the International System of Units(SI), despite being based on the watt, as the hour is not a SI unit. The SI unit of energy is the joule(J), equal to one watt-second. It is, however, a commonly used unit, especially for measuring electric energy. 1 watt-hour is equivalent to 3, 600 joules(1 W x 3600 s), the joule being the canonical SI unit of energy. Thus a kilowatt-hour is 3, 600, 000 joules or 3. 6 megajoules.... The kilowatt-hour is commonly used for electrical and natural gas energy. Many electric utility companies use the kilowatt-hour for billing. 3, record 13, English, - kilowatt%2Dhour

The Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales, CNES(French Space Agency) took a spectacular picture of the European ERS-1 satellite via SPOT 4, the most recent optical observation satellite in the SPOT family, which was launched on 24 March 1998.... From its orbit at an altitude of 820 km, SPOT 4 is able to pick out details of 10 metres on the Earth's surface, which is moving at a speed of 24, 000 km per hour. The ERS-1 orbit is 41 km below that of SPOT, which means that the latter can distinguish details of 50 cm in size on ERS-1. However, since ERS-1 flies much lower it flies faster than SPOT 4 and overtakes it with a relative velocity of about 250 km/h. 2, record 17, English, - optical%20observation%20satellite

ERS-1 parcourt une orbite qui passe 41 km sous celle de SPOT; cette proximité permet à SPOT 4 de distinguer sur ERS-1 des détails de 50 cm. Lock-in is a fundamental physical phenomenon associated with all oscillating devices. Laser gyros exibit the same phenomenon, in that the coupling mechanism is the reflection of light from one laser beam back along the path where it interacts with the oppositley traveling beam. This is called backscatter and is caused primarily by imperfect mirrors. Therefore, at low rotation rates, there is no frequency difference between the counter-rotating beams so that the gyroscope does not indicate any rotation. In spite of the ring laser gyro's dead zone whith lock-in thresholds on the order of hundreds of degrees per hour, it is still feasible to obtain measurements of rotation rates of less than 1 deg/h. 1, record 18, English, - ring%20laser%20gyro%26rsquo%3Bs%20dead%20zone

In most patient with growth hormone(GH) secreting pituitary adenomas and clinically nonfunctioning pituitary tumors(NFPT) the intravenous injection of thyrotropin releasing hormone(TRH) augments the secretion of GH and subunits of gonatropin hormones respectively. Similar hormone responses to TRH have been detected in rat pituitary cell lines and primary human pituitary tumor cultures in vitro. Nevertheless the TRH effect on tumor hormonal secretion has not been well characterized. In the present study we examined TRH-induced hormone secretion in GH secreting tumors and in NFPT in vitro. Cultured cells secreted betaFSH secretion at 60 to 90 min, with no further increase at 34 h. TRH-stimulated GH secretion peaked at 90-120 min, and decreased after 3 h, but a secondary rise occurred after 24 h of incubation. Chronic daily exposure to TRH followed by an acute TRH challenge resulted in a further increase of GH secretion after one hour. 3, record 19, English, - thyrotropin%2Dreleasing%20hormone%20challenge
