A thermal vacuum test on the first flight vehicle of the H-II Transfer Vehicle(HTV) has been carried out at the Spacecraft Integration and Test Building at the Tsukuba Space Center. The purpose of the test is to evaluate the thermal design of the structure and to verify its endurance in the harsh environment of space by stimulating the vacuum and thermal environment in space. Thermal vacuum test for the Pressurized Carrier and Unpressurized Carrier have already been completed, and the main part of Avionics Module and Propulsion Module combined is now in the 13-meter diameter space chamber for testing.

CONT

Proximity operations ... provide capabilities related to supporting safe operations with other vehicles while maintaining a habitable environment and supporting internal and external user payload operations. Vehicle is actively determining and controlling attitude nonpropulsively.

CONT

Numerous proximity operations near the ISS [International Space Station] have been and will be performed. Orbiters will continuously carry astronauts and modules required for the assembly, and the Crew Return Vehicle(CRV) is planned for emergency evacuation. The Automatic Transfer Vehicle(ATV) of the European Space Agency(ESA) will perform regular reboosting and refueling of the ISS. Other vehicles such as Progress, Soyuz and H-II Transfer Vehicle will fly for crew transport, logistics, and resupply. Relative positioning rather than absolute positioning is the major concern for these operations. Better relative accuracy will provide fewer correction burns, thus saving consumables and other operational resources.

HTV [H-II Transfer Vehicle] can carry 6 to 7 tons of supplies loaded on its logistics carrier. The pressurized logistic carrier aboard HTV will be used to transport items such as consumables(food and clothes for astronauts) and experiment devices or specimens to be installed in ISS [International Space Station]. Exposed experiment equipment for use in the vacuum environment is transported in an unpressurized logistics carrier aboard HTV. This unpressurized logistics carrier will be added to HTV.

CONT

H-II Transfer Vehicle is one of the orbital transfer vehicles which is designed to transport various cargos to the International Space Station(ISS) with the Japanese H-IIA rocket. The HTV will approach and hover beside the Space Station, then the HTV will be captured by ISS manipulator and will be berthed to the predicted position. To avoid any hazardous situation to the Space Station during free flight, the HTV is designed to meet the needs of high reliability and safety. The HTV is planned to outfit with two types of logistics carrier for efficient transportation.

The HTV [H-II Transfer Vehicle] can be configured to carry both pressurized and unpressurized payloads in a mixed configuration or to carry only pressurized cargo. It performs rendezvous and approaches the forward end of the Station where it is grappled by a robotic arm and berthed.... Unpressurized payloads reside outside the ISS [International Space Station] as attached payloads, and if necessary, they may have to provide some of their own environmental controls internal to their hardware.
