Subungual hematomas occur beneath the fingernail or toenail. The usual cause is injury to the finger or toe, which results in discoloration as blood collects beneath the nail.

Subungual hematoma. This condition results from trauma to the nail matrix or nail bed, such as repeated minor injuries (e.g., tight shoes, sports injuries) or substantial impact (as from a hammer).

This is a rare observation which usually occurs in association with oesophageal hyperpressure and sometimes with impaired haemostasis. The strategy for diagnosis is based on tomodensitography and also endosonography and magnetic resonance imagery.

A simple and safe technique is described for evacuation of pretibial haematoma in elderly patients. A Yankauer sucker attached to the wall suction is used to evacuate the haematoma under local anaesthesia. This technique is used in the accident and emergency department and the ward.
