La grêle est une précipitation de particules de givre dont la taille dépasse 5 millimètres et qui prennent alors le nom de grêlons. Composés de glace soit transparente, soit partiellement ou complètement opaque, ces derniers ont une forme plus ou moins sphéroïdale, conique ou irrégulière. Leur diamètre est le plus souvent compris entre 0,5 et 5 centimètres. Mais des grêlons beaucoup plus gros peuvent aussi être observés.
