Cet arc est formé quand la lumière solaire entre dans le cristal par la face horizontale supérieure et en ressort par une face latérale verticale. Quand le soleil est au-dessus de 32,2 degrés, la lumière est entièrement réfléchie à l'intérieur du cristal; c'est pourquoi on ne voit cet arc que lorsque le Soleil est relativement bas sur l'horizon. À 32,2 degrés, la lumière ressort du cristal verticalement vers le bas; on verra alors l'arc circumzénithal comme un point éclatant au zénith. À mesure que le soleil descend (se couche), le point se déploie pour former un arc de cercle coloré et centré au zénith face au soleil.
