HALO EFFECT [8 records]

Record 1 2011-03-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Astrophysics and Cosmography
DEF

A large, relatively dust-free, spherical region surrounding a spiral galaxy, such as our own [Milky Way].

OBS

The inner, visible part of the halo, which has roughly the same diameter as the galactic disk, is occupied by Population II objects, including globular clusters and old, individual stars. Beyond this is a much larger region, called the dark halo or extended halo, containing large amounts of dark matter, the presence of which is revealed by its gravitational effect on the galaxy's rotation. The nature of galactic dark matter is still undetermined but the most popular theory, supported by some recent observations, is that the dark halo is home to vast numbers of small, unseen bodies known as MACHOs.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Personnel and Job Evaluation
DEF

The tendency to rate someone high or low on all measures of job performance because of one dominating characteristic.

OBS

While the halo effect is generally positive for the ratee, it can sometimes be negative. Some would then call it the negative halo effect or the reverse halo effect.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Évaluation du personnel et des emplois
DEF

Record 5 1997-03-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atomic Physics
CONT

The most fruitful direction to look for "microlensing" is towards the Milky Way's nearest neighbouring galaxy, The Large Magellanic Cloud. Any light that reaches earth from the Cloud will have had to go through the Milky Way's halo, so if the halo is packed with MACHOs, their effect should show up.

CONT

The microlensing that makes stars seem brighter has a big brother of an illusion: the so-called gravitational lensing of one entire galaxy’s light by another one lying in the way.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Coins and Bank Notes
  • Numismatics
  • Coining
DEF

The result of a hint of circulation on a coin that may otherwise appear uncirculated, as judged by markings, etc.

OBS

When the coin is rotated in good lighting there appears to be a slight dullness or halo around the monarch's bust or design elements in the open fields. The lustre that is protected by the letters near the periphery is distinctly different. The same is true for mirror-like fields, i. e. the quality of the mirror effect is much better in the protected areas. The dulling effect is a result of the very lightest amount of contact of the coin with other objects, enough to disrupt the lustre.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Graphic Arts and Printing
DEF

A combination of a normal letterpress ink and an oil-soluble dye of a different colour. The dye gradually bleeds out producing a halo around the dots which form the halftone image. The effect is that of two-colour printing.

Key term(s)
  • double tone ink

French

Domaine(s)
  • Imprimerie et arts graphiques
DEF
