Le terme «halocarbone» qui est meilleur que le terme «halocarbure» est cependant d'usage peu fréquent. Le terme «halocarbure» quoique de forme discutable peut être employé dans un contexte de continuité, particulièrement si le nom était généralement accepté et utilisé antérieurement (par ex. dans un règlement fédéral).
