  • Space Physics
CONT

The Halogen Occultation Experiment(HALOE) was launched on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite UARS spacecraft September 12, 1991 as part of the Earth Science Enterprise(ESE) Program. The experiment uses solar occultation to measure vertical profiles of Ozone(O3), Hydrogen Chloride(HCl), Hydrogen Fluoride(HF), Methane(CH4), Water(H2O), Nitric Oxide(NO), Nitrogen Dioxide(NO2), Aerosol Extinction, Aerosol Surface and Temperature versus pressure with an instantaneous field of view of 1. 6 km at the earth limb.

  • Pollutants
  • Climate Change
  • Cryogenics
CONT

... a fluorine gas reference cell... was used in a spectrometer on the Halogen Occultation Experiment(HALOE) spacecraft to measure the amount of fluorinated hydrocarbon gas(freon) in the earth's upper atmosphere. This HALOE experiment was important, because it proved that fluorinated hydrocarbons are present in significant quantities in the upper atmosphere and that freon causes damage to the ozone layer...

CONT

Most industrial and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units use a fluorinated hydrocarbon gas such as trichloromonofluoromethane (CC1(3)F) as a refrigerant.
