The CIT, also known as the guilty knowledge test [GKT], is used in criminal investigations to examine whether a person recognizes crime-relevant information that innocent people would not know. In the CIT, an examiner presents several items to an examinee, one of which is a crime-relevant item. The items are selected such that innocent examinees would not be able to distinguish the crime-relevant(critical) item from the crime-irrelevant(non-critical) items. Each item is presented once in a block and this block is repeated several times in different presentation orders. During the CIT, the examiner records physiological responses to the items. In the case that the responses do not differ between the critical and non-critical items, the examiner would infer that the examinee does not recognize the critical item. On the other hand, in the case that the responses differ between the critical and non-critical items, the examiner would infer that the examinee recognizes the critical item. 1, record 6, English, - concealed%20information%20test

A sling has a small cradle or pouch in the middle of two lengths of cord. The sling stone is placed in the pouch. The middle finger or thumb is placed through a loop on the end of one cord, and a tab at the end of the other cord is placed between the thumb and forefinger. The sling is swung in an arc, and the tab released at a precise moment. This frees the projectile to fly to the target. The sling essentially works by extending the length of a human arm, thus allowing stones to be thrown much farther than they could be by hand. 3, record 17, English, - sling

Urbanism and disurbanism in the Soviet Union.... Milyutin was not a pure disurbanist. he preferred being in between the two currents of urbanism and disurbanism, calling for a renewed urban lifestyle in which the city would have met the countryside by sharing housing and social institutions. On the one hand, he did not want to abolish the city in order to create a pure industrialised socialist countryside(as in Okhitovich's disurbanist city concept...), as the most radical disurbanists would have preferred, but he did want to limit the growth of existent cities at any cost, as he considered them a product of the contradictions of capital, and for this reason oppressive towards the proletariat. 2, record 21, English, - disurbanist

3, record 21, French, - d%C3%A9surbaniste

Losee's test... is similar to the jerk test, in that the limb is moved from flexion to extension. If the left knee is being tested, the examiner stands to the left of the patient, grasps the foot with his left hand, flexes the knee to about 40° and uses his abdomen as a fulcrum to apply a valgus stress to the knee. With his right hand he increases the valgus pressure, placing the fingers on the patella and the thumb behind the fibular head..., while simultaneously pulling the upper tibia forward. On subsequent extension, during which the lower leg may rotate inward, a lateral snapping will occur between the femur and tibia at about 20° if there is an anterior cruciate insufficiency with anterolateral rotatory instability... 1, record 22, English, - Losee%26rsquo%3Bs%20test

Zone of proximal development is the difference between the child's capacity to solve problems on his own, and his capacity to solve them with assistance. In other words, the actual developmental level refers to all the functions and activities that a child can perform on his own, independently without the help of anyone else. On the other hand, the zone of proximal development includes all the functions and activities that a child or a learner can perform only with the assistance of someone else. The person who intervenes in this scaffolding process could be an adult(parent, teacher, caretaker, language instructor) or another peer who has already mastered that particular function. 1, record 28, English, - zone%20of%20proximal%20development

At one time, there was a major distinction between securities firms. These were investment dealers on the one hand and stock brokers on the other, and individual securities firms tended to specialize as one or the other. This distinction has largely disappeared. In simple terms, an investment dealer acts as principal in securities transactions while a stock broker acts as agent. A securities firm acting as a dealer or principal owns the securities that are sold to or bought from investors. Thus, the securities are part of the firm's inventory. The difference between buying and selling prices is the dealer's gross profit or loss. On the other hand, the stock broker, as an agent, acts on behalf of the buyer or seller but does not own the securities. 6, record 36, English, - stockbroker

6, record 36, French, - courtier

The drawing apparatus does not project an image originating from the microscope, it rather adds an external image, that of the drawing, to the one normally observed in the microscope eyepiece.... The drawing attachment described here fits easily between the binocular tube and the tube support of a Wild compound microscope. It is a tubular piece, protruding horizontally to the left or the right hand of the observer.... Similar "drawing tubes" for camera lucida viewing with stereomicroscopes are also available. Because each ocular in the stereomicroscope produces an image of the specimen from a different angle, both images together give the impression of 3D-vision, but obviously, the drawing picked up from the drawing tube can be superimposed with only one of the two members of the stereopair. 1, record 37, English, - drawing%20tube

The difference between a determinable fee and a fee simple defeasible by condition subsequent is not always easy to discern. The essential distinction is that the determining event in a determinable fee itself sets the limit for the estate first granted. A condition subsequent, on the other hand, is an independent clause added to a limitation of a complete fee simple absolute which operates so as to defeat it.... Words which form a separate clause of defeasance, such as "provided that, ""on condition that, ""but if, "or "if happen that, "operate as a condition subsequent.(Megarry & Wade, 4th ed., 1975, p. 76). 2, record 38, English, - fee%20simple%20defeasible%20by%20condition%20subsequent

While carbon nanotubes(CNT) and carbon nanofibers(CNF) are both hollow, nanometer in scale, and produced in a similar manner, there are distinct differences which significantly impact their performance and ability to be processed. The primary differences between the materials are morphology, size, ease of processing, and price. Carbon nanofibers, also known as Stacked-Cup Carbon Nanotubes(SCCNT), have a unique morphology in that graphene planes are canted from the fiber axis, resulting in exposed edge planes on the interior and exterior surfaces of the fiber. CNTs, on the other hand, typically resemble an assembly of concentric cylinders of graphene. To illustrate the difference in morphology, Figure 1... shows a side by side comparison of A) multi-walled carbon nanotubes [MWCNT] and B) stacked-cup carbon nanotubes.... Figure 1. A) Multi-wall CNTs are composed of concentric cylinders of graphene where the basal planes form an inert surface. B) The stacked-cup structure of CNF has exposed graphitic edge planes along its length, providing opportunities for chemical modification of the surface for covalent bonding directly with the matrix. 7, record 39, English, - cup%2Dstacked%20carbon%20nanofiber

Because of the differences in the legal relationships created by an assignment of lease on one hand, and a sublease on the other, the distinction between the two must be carefully noted.... When the tenant assigns the lease to a third party, the assignee becomes the tenant of the landlord with resulting privity of estate between the two.... Thus, in the case of an assignment, covenants which touch and concern the land are enforceable between the assignee and the landlord.

2, record 53, French, - remonte%2Dpente%20%C3%A0%20soucoupes

While most banks have less than 250 members, they achieve service flexibility and economies of scale through networking together into regional federations [...] CVECAs are member-based microfinance intermediaries inspired by external technical support. Extradition of the citizens of the requested state. Another question, which often arises, is whether a citizen of the requested state should be handed over for trial in respect of commission of an offence in the requesting State. The relevant treaty of extradition may contain provisions in this regard, but generally the provisions of treaties are silent on this question. It therefore becomes necessary for each government to decide whether it would extradite its own nationals even though there may exist a treaty between the requesting and the requested states. It may be argued, on the one hand, that if a state is competent under its own laws to try and punish its nationals for crimes committed abroad, there is no need to surrender them to the requesting State, as they can be dealt with adequately in the requested State. On the other hand, it may be pointed out that the courts of the country where the crime is committed would be in a better position to deal with the matter since witnesses would be available more readily there and it may also be necessary to have local inspection of the place of the offence. 2, record 58, English, - requested%20State

It takes between 3 and 3. 5 kilos of French plums to make one kilo of Agen prunes. Picking is... done entirely by hand. First, the plum trees are "shaken" and the fruit falls into nets held under the trees, ready for collection.... The plums are carefully washed, then sorted and sized. Drying is carried out in three stages, to permit a "gentle" dehydration, in special chambers or continuous-drying tunnels. By the end of the drying process, the plums have transformed into prunes, with a humidity level of between 21 and 23%. 1, record 61, English, - Agen%20prune

The ball is smaller than a football in order for the players to be able to hold and handle it with a single hand(though contact with both hands is perfectly allowed). Some American versions use a volleyball. It is transported by bouncing it between hands and floor-much as in basketball. A player may only hold the ball for three seconds and may only take three steps with the ball in hand. There are many variations, a common American version allows only 1 step with the ball, and afterward MUST pass the ball to another teammate or shoot. 4, record 68, English, - team%20handball%20ball

It is important to make a distinction between the vapor pressure of a liquid... and the pressure of a vapor. Core project of International Geosphere-Biosphere Program. BAHC is an interdisciplinary project combining and integrating expertise from many disciplines, in particular eco-physiology, pedology, hydrology, and meteorology. BAHC in this respect has a transfer function : on the one hand developing techniques and algorithms to provide climatic data needed for hydroecological research, thereby translating the results of the World Climate Research Programme(WCRP) into the scales relevant for studies of changes of the conditions at the land surface, and on the other hand, providing soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer at larger scales, in particular, the areal pattern of heat and moisture fluxes according to land-surface heterogeneity. BAHC concentrates on investigations at scales where detailed studies of hydroecological processes are feasible in selected areas representing major ecosystems of the world and across boundaries between different ecosystems(ecotones, biome boundaries, etc.). 2, record 78, English, - Biospheric%20Aspects%20of%20the%20Hydrological%20Cycle

2, record 81, French, - rendement%20biologique

Figure 1... shows the principle of laminography, a synchronized motion between an X-ray source and a detector generating an geometric focus plane and forms an X-ray slice image of that. Objects in the focal plane are always projected at the same position of the detector. On the other hand, those that are not in the focal plane are projected to other positions of the detector and thus are blurred as the source and detector move in a complete circle. Thus the "noise" from the materials above and below the focal plane is eliminated when all the images on the detectors are overlapped. 2, record 84, English, - laminography

This shows the difference between a slow-release and a regular or quick-release nitrogen fertilizer. The slow-release fertilizer... is encapsulated. This coat may be made of elemental sulfur, plastic, or other materials. As microbes in the soil attack and create holes in the capsule, nitrogen fertilizer will slowly leak out. By varying the thickness of the capsule, manufacturers can control the rate of nitrogen release. On the other hand, a quick-release fertilizer granules is rapidly solubilized by soil moisture. All of the nitrogen is immediately available to the plant. 2, record 86, English, - quick%2Drelease%20fertilizer

There is often confusion between the terms Nuncios and apostolic delegates. The nuncios are usually titular bishops or archbishops and have a double function : representing the pope before the civil government and also before the Church in the country. The apostolic delegates on the other hand deal only with the church within the country to which they are sent and they are not accredited to the government and do not have a political role. 2, record 93, English, - apostolic%20delegate
