DEF

Lever on handlebar to activate brake.

CONT

The braking action begins as the rider squeezes the brake lever that pulls the brake cable.

CONT

The idea of adjusting the brakes is to give the brake cable the proper tension. It's the proper tension if the end of the hand lever travels about 2 inches when you fully apply the brakes.

CONT

On a bicycle we all know that when we squeeze the brake handle, rubber pads are pushed against the wheel to slow down its motion.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Transport
  • Aeroindustry
DEF

A braking system which is independent of the main hydraulic system. It can be used to slow or stop the vehicle if the primary brakes fail, or to hold the vehicle stationary though the brake pedal is not depressed. It usually consists of a foot pedal or hand lever that actuates either front or rear brakes mechanically through a series of cables and linkages.

Record 9 1993-11-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cycling
DEF

One of three kinds of rim or caliper brakes whose action originates from the side of the wheel(usually the left side), using one pivot point for two caliper arms. They are activated by means of a sheathed brake cable connected at one end to the brake lever mounted on the handlebar and at the other end to one of the caliper arms. When the hand lever is squeezed the cable retracts within its sheath, pulling the right caliper toward the rim and exerting an equal and opposite force on the cable sheath which, pressing downward, forces the left caliper toward the wheel rim, in such a way as to press rubber blocks against the rim simultaneously, stopping the bicycle through pressure and friction.

CONT

... the sidepull brake has a firm feel that consumes only a little finger motion when varying the finger force to change the braking force.

CONT

With side-pull brakes you have a control cable that attaches directly to one of the caliper arms, usually on the left side.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Cyclisme
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Jib-Type Hoisting Apparatus
CONT

Hand hoists are chain operated. There are four types : spur geared, worm geared, differential, and pull-lift or lever.... The spur-gear type costs the most but is the most economical to operate, with an efficiency as high as 85%. Where hoists are to be used frequently, it is the type most recommended.... Spur-gear hoists... require a brake to restrain loads during lowering or holding.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Appareils de levage à bras
CONT

Palans à bras. Ils sont de plusieurs sortes. [...]
