Subject field(s)
  • Outfitting of Ships
  • Maneuvering of Ships
CONT

When the "haul in" signal is given on the docking telegraph …, the operator pulls on the slack end of the rope that is wound loosely round the drum of the winch. This tightens the rope slightly on the drum and it grips the surface. The amount of tension on the free end of the rope is multiplied several hundred times and the resulting force is enough to move the entire ship, pulling it into the correct position. The [captain] signals with the docking telegraph or a hand held radio to tell the winch operator what to do and, by heaving in and paying out the ropes at each end of the ship, she can be positioned in exactly the right place regardless of the wind and waves.

DEF

A hand-operated winch of varying capacity, used for forcible entry.

OBS

Winch. A mechanism arranged to hoist by manual or mechanical power through the medium of a rope, cable, etc., winding on a drum is a winch... The hand power is applied at a crank or cranks, which are attached to a shaft bearing a pinion gear. This pinion engages with a large gear attached to the winding drum... A high-capacity winch may have a double reduction gear, instead of the single gear illustrated.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Water Treatment (Water Supply)
  • Water Pollution
CONT

Conventional vacuum drum filters have limited application in sludge dewatering because of progressive blinding of the filter media. On the other hand, the continuous belt drum filter has been extensively utilized because the endless belt travels off the drum where high-pressure water sprays clean both sides of the filter cloth to control the blinding problem.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Traitement des eaux
  • Pollution de l'eau
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Plumbing Fixtures
CONT

The compost finishing drawer, the second independent chamber [of the three chamber system], is immediately below the composting drum, and just above the evaporating chamber. Compost in this drawer is totally isolated from material in the Bio-drum. Although it is no longer subject to contamination from fresh waste, it should not be used on edible vegetable. While in the finishing drawer, the compost is surrounded by a stream of drying air, and absorbs the radiant heat from the evaporating chamber. It is here that composting and sanitation are completed, and the compost becomes safe to handle. The finishing drawer can be pulled out and removed by hand(no tools or screws are needed) and the sanitized compost emptied whenever it is necessary to extract more compost from the drum.

CONT

DEF

A small, two-wheel truck, with two handles, used in handling merchandise of comparatively small dimensions over short distances.

CONT

OBS
