Strategy for [Avalanche] Victims.... As the avalanche is coming to a stop. Make an air space around your mouth. [...] Keep one hand near your mouth to scoop out an air space and wiggle to make an air space around your body.... Your breath will quickly condense onto the snow around your mouth and form an "ice mask, "an impermeable barrier that allows carbon dioxide to more quickly build up around your mouth. A larger space around your mouth tends to delay the formation of an ice mask, giving you extra precious minutes. Also, a cavity around your body lets the carbon dioxide diffuse more efficiently. It is thought that completely buried victims without an air pocket usually die in 20 minutes while victims with an air pocket can live up to 120 minutes. 2, record 6, English, - ice%20mask

1, record 6, French, - masque%20de%20glace

This layer is not self-supporting. Traditionally it is used to improve handling properties(M&M's melt in your mouth, not in your hand) or to prevent moisture loss... It can also be used as an adhesive to seasonings on snack foods..., as a glaze on baked goods... and to increase shelf life and reduce the need of packaging material. The shelf life is extended, because the film acts as a barrier to moisture and/or oil and/or vapor transmission. An edible coating has to have good eating properties : acceptable color, odor, taste, flavor and texture or be undetectable. An other requirement is that it must adhere to the food, but(in most cases) does not stick to packaging material. 3, record 8, English, - edible%20coating

... We would make the distinction between live metaphors and dead ones. The latter are of no interest for our present purpose : for instance, there is no need to translate "river mouth" by "les bouches du fleuve" rather than "l'estuaire". The argument for including live metaphors on the other hand is that they add information : this is based on the idea that metaphors are derived from similes and that similes make comparisons.... 1, record 17, English, - live%20metaphor
