When the "haul in" signal is given on the docking telegraph …, the operator pulls on the slack end of the rope that is wound loosely round the drum of the winch. This tightens the rope slightly on the drum and it grips the surface. The amount of tension on the free end of the rope is multiplied several hundred times and the resulting force is enough to move the entire ship, pulling it into the correct position. The [captain] signals with the docking telegraph or a hand held radio to tell the winch operator what to do and, by heaving in and paying out the ropes at each end of the ship, she can be positioned in exactly the right place regardless of the wind and waves. 1, record 6, English, - docking%20telegraph

Ice screws... Push the ice screw into the ice while twisting the hanger by hand in a clockwise direction to get it started. Placing the ice screw at waist level allows you to push harder and turn the screw with less effort. Continue to turn the ice screw handle by hand until the hanger nearly contacts the ice surface. Chip away any fractured ice using your ice axe, then turn the ice screw handle the remainder of the way. Align the hanger so that it hangs downward—in the direction of pull.... When possible, choose an ice screw length that will not bottom out on rock underneath the ice. Turning your ice screw into rock will damage the teeth and can fracture the ice. 3, record 8, English, - ice%20screw

The susceptible-infected-susceptible(SIS) model of Weiss and Dishon is one of the simplest models of endemic infections. The model describes the evolution of an infection in a fixed population, with no restriction on the possibility of reinfection of a previously infected and now recovered individual. This is in contrast to the venerable susceptible-infection-recovered(SIR) model, where reinfection is not permitted. Both models exhibit a threshold value of the infectivity, below which the infection immediately dies out. Below the threshold, where only a tiny fraction of the population is impacted, the two models have essentially equivalent statistical properties. Above the threshold, in the SIR model, the infection is self-limiting, since in a fixed population the number of potential new victims, the susceptible pool, is monotonically decreasing in size. The SIS model, on the other hand, describes an endemic infection which can(above the threshold) persist indefinitely, at least at the deterministic level. Thus, the statistics of infection size in the two models above the threshold are very different. 1, record 21, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Dsusceptible%20model

PFPP [panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy] and psychoanalysis are based on similar psychoanalytic concepts, yet are distinguished from each other on a couple of key points. Psychoanalysis is generally viewed as a long-term venture, usually lasting many years. Its focus is usually broad and involves personality restructuring. PFPP, on the other hand, is generally shorter and more specifically focused on sorting out the specific symptoms of panic disorder and agoraphobia. 3, record 25, English, - panic%2Dfocused%20psychodynamic%20psychotherapy

On the one hand it may refer to the result of going through(e. g. he can hit a very hard "serve") ;finally, it may even refer to one of the two attempts allowed to complete a service(e. g. he is about to make his second "serve"-French : deuxième balle de service). Today nearly 2, 000 different enzymes are known. Many have been isolated in pure homogeneous form, and at least 200 have been crystallized.... NMR studies of globular proteins in solution give data consistent with the crystal structure, as has been amply demonstrated for lysozyme. However, where there is an equilibrium among two or more conformations of the enzyme in solution, crystallization may select out only one of the conformations. [alpha]-Chymotrypsin has a substantial fraction of an inactive conformation present under the conditions of crystallization, but only the active form of the enzyme crystallizes. An allosteric effector molecule that changes the conformation of the protein in solution may have no effect on the crystalline protein, as has been found, for example, with phosphorylase b. The enzyme is frozen in one conformation, with the crystal lattice forces preventing any conformational change. On the other hand, the addition of an effector to phosphorylase a causes the crystals first to crack and then to anneal, giving crystals of the enzyme in a second conformation. 2, record 35, English, - crystallize

2, record 37, French, - remonte%2Dpente%20%C3%A0%20soucoupes

Strategy for [Avalanche] Victims.... As the avalanche is coming to a stop. Make an air space around your mouth. Your breath will quickly condense onto the snow around your mouth and form an "ice mask, "an impermeable barrier that allows carbon dioxide to more quickly build up around your mouth. A larger space around your mouth tends to delay the formation of an ice mask, giving you extra precious minutes. Also, a cavity around your body lets the carbon dioxide diffuse more efficiently. Steering is accomplished by pulling up on the blade as it is brought forward. About halfway through the recovery, the paddle is allowed to slip out of the water in readiness for the next power stroke. The trick is getting a very slight angle on the blade as it comes forward. There is one other stroke for paddling a straight course that should be covered here. It is a very useful stroke for paddling in a strong wind, running rapids, and paddling silently to sneak up on animals. It is called the indian stroke or underwater stroke and is an extension of the Canadian stroke. As the paddle knifes forward, the grip of the paddle is rotated in the palm of your upper hand. The rotation makes it possible to bring the paddle around, ready for the next power stroke without taking the blade out of the water, it's a very nice stroke to know because with the paddle remaining in the water, the canoeist is in control throughout the entire stroke. 1, record 46, English, - indian%20stroke

Extradition of the citizens of the requested state. Another question, which often arises, is whether a citizen of the requested state should be handed over for trial in respect of commission of an offence in the requesting State. The relevant treaty of extradition may contain provisions in this regard, but generally the provisions of treaties are silent on this question. It therefore becomes necessary for each government to decide whether it would extradite its own nationals even though there may exist a treaty between the requesting and the requested states. It may be argued, on the one hand, that if a state is competent under its own laws to try and punish its nationals for crimes committed abroad, there is no need to surrender them to the requesting State, as they can be dealt with adequately in the requested State. On the other hand, it may be pointed out that the courts of the country where the crime is committed would be in a better position to deal with the matter since witnesses would be available more readily there and it may also be necessary to have local inspection of the place of the offence. 2, record 47, English, - requested%20State

1, record 48, English, - requesting%20State

When the angle of ice steepens, and more security than the cross-body technique(piolet ramasse) provides is desirable, the axe is planted in the anchor position(piolet ancre)... : with the outside hand just above the spike, the axe is swung so that the pick is anchored in the ice in front and above the climber's head with the shaft parallel to the slope. The inside hand reaches up and grasps the axe head in the self-arrest position. By pulling down on the anchored axe, the climber steps up to a new in-balance position. A gentle and constant outward pull must be kept on the shaft to set the teeth and keep the axe locked into the ice. Strategy for [Avalanche] Victims.... As the avalanche is coming to a stop. Make an air space around your mouth.... Keep one hand near your mouth to scoop out an air space and wiggle to make an air space around your body. Do a visual search for clues on the surface(that is, hand, foot, clothing, and equipment). Call out occasionally and listen for responses from victims. Pull any items found out on the snow to see if a victim is attached. Mark the location of found items and bring them to the attention of the rescue leader. Listen carefully for transceiver signals in these locations.(If victims were not wearing transceivers or if is unknown whether transceivers were used, quickly probe the area around found items.) A sole licence is one in which the patentee does not himself abstain from manufacture. Such licences are not therefore very common since the patentee will usually either wish to maintain his monopoly and satisfy the market by his own manufacture or get out and leave it to his licensee. On the other hand a licensee is often not interested in paying an entrance fee to be one of a crowd, so to speak, but is prepared to pay for the privilege of running in double harness with the patentee and from the patentee's point of view discretion may be the better part of valour if he is confronted by a powerful and reluctant competitor who is prepared to settle on this basis. For these and other reasons the sole licence is rare but is sometimes a way out of a difficulty. 4, record 65, English, - sole%20license

Dextre [Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator] is designed so that only one arm can move at a time in order to avoid self-collision, achieve greater stability and maintain operational similarity with Canadarm2. The greater stability is provided by the immobile arm, which is first commanded to anchor Dextre to an ISS [International Space Station] stabilization point. At the tip of each arm, we find a "hand", known technically as the Orbital Replacement Unit/Tool Changeout Mechanism(OTCM). The OTCM consists of a set of parallel retractable jaws, which serve to grip payloads and tools. Each OTCM is also equipped with a retractable motorized socket wrench to mate and demate mechanisms on-orbit, as well as lights and a black and white camera. Dextre lower body is equipped with a pair of pan/tilt colour cameras that allow astronauts aboard the ISS, and engineers on the ground, to monitor the task, which is out of direct eyesight. 1, record 70, English, - orbital%20replacement%20unit%2Ftool%20changeout%20mechanism

... hand held weather stations take about every weather factor into consideration. ... Very sophisticated ones not only measure weather conditions every second but make E.T. or throttle stop predictions every 4 seconds. A sophisticated drag racing weather station will allow you to store data on as many as 256 previous runs and performs an analysis to give you a prediction based on the weather conditions instantly. It can keep and use separate databases for separate vehicles, tracks, or classes. Some of the really sophisticated stations have a prediction deviation function [which] gives a reliability value of the prediction. It gives you a margin of error based on the information in the database that you chose. The Kestrel line of wind meters or anemometers... in less than 60 seconds, provide the answer to the major spraying season question that haunts producers each morning :"How windy is it?" The Kestrel 1000... gives a fast answer to wind speed average and gusts.... the model 2000 will add temperature and for those really cold days on the sprayer, add wind chill to that list. The 3000 adds humidity, dew point and heat stress index.... But for an all out weather station you can hold in the palm of your hand, the Kestrel 4000 provides all of this, in addition to wet bulb, altitude, air density and barometric pressure. Most importantly, 250 of these readings can be recorded in the device's memory and later transferred to the farm computer.... Michael Naughton of Nielsen Keller-man said the company released the 1000 in 1999 with the intention of it being a tool for sailors and outdoor sports and weather enthusiasts. "Farmers are turning out to be a really big part of our business. The 4000 is really popular with them. We were surprised by the demand for little hand-held weather stations, "he said. 2, record 71, English, - hand%20held%20weather%20station

Washing and Scrubbing the Ore. Washing of run-of-mine ore removes obscuring dust and casual dirt from the surface of the pieces and facilitates recognition when hand picking is to be practised. A second effect may be the removal of primary slimes of no value. Clays, colloidal fines, and similar valueless material can easily be taken out at the earlier stages, but may be difficult to remove once fine crushing has liberated a substantial quantity of finely shattered mineral.... 1, record 80, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20d%27extraction%20par%20solvants

A drill press is preferable to a hand drill when the location and orientation of the hole must be controlled accurately. A drill press is composed of a base that supports a column, the column in turn supports a table. Work can be supported on the table with a vise or hold down clamps, or the table can be swiveled out of the way to allow tall work to be supported directly on the base. Height of the table can be adjusted with a table lift crank than locked in place with a table lock. The column also supports a head containing a motro. The motor turns the spindle at a speed controlled by a variable speed control dial. The spindle holds a drill chuck to hold the cutting tools(drill bits, center drills, deburring tools, etc.). 4, record 95, French, - scie%20circulaire%20portative

When picking up lightweight objects, never bend from the waist. Face the object; brace one hand on your knee or work surface to help offset the weight of the load and help in stabilizing your body;... bend at the hip,... lifting the opposite leg up and out behind you. This shows the difference between a slow-release and a regular or quick-release nitrogen fertilizer. The slow-release fertilizer... is encapsulated. This coat may be made of elemental sulfur, plastic, or other materials. As microbes in the soil attack and create holes in the capsule, nitrogen fertilizer will slowly leak out. By varying the thickness of the capsule, manufacturers can control the rate of nitrogen release. On the other hand, a quick-release fertilizer granules is rapidly solubilized by soil moisture. All of the nitrogen is immediately available to the plant. 2, record 98, English, - quick%2Drelease%20fertilizer
