HAND PADDLE [11 records]

Record 1 2025-01-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Sports Equipment and Accessories
  • Swimming
CONT

The strength-training benefits of paddles depend largely on a swimmer's awareness of hand speed. If a hand paddle increases the area of the swimmer's propulsive surface, and the swimmer moves the hand with the paddle at the same speed as without the paddle, the swimmer will generate more propulsion. However, because of the larger surface area, a swimmer will naturally move the hand through the water more slowly with the paddle than without at first. The strength-training benefit depends on the swimmer gradually increasing the hand speed when wearing paddles.

CONT

At the end of the J stroke, the paddle is kniffed forward underwater with the power face of the paddle almost flat and facing up. Steering is accomplished by pulling up on the blade as it is brought forward. About halfway through the recovery, the paddle is allowed to slip out of the water in readiness for the next power stroke. The trick is getting a very slight angle on the blade as it comes forward. If the angle is wrong the paddle will plane out of the water or drive too deep. The angle is controlled by the upper hand.

OBS

It used to be called the kniffing J but American canoeists began referring to it as the Canadian stroke. Most Canadians are happy to go along with this name because it is such a beautiful stroke.

CONT

There is one other stroke for paddling a straight course that should be covered here. It is a very useful stroke for paddling in a strong wind, running rapids, and paddling silently to sneak up on animals. It is called the indian stroke or underwater stroke and is an extension of the Canadian stroke. As the paddle knifes forward, the grip of the paddle is rotated in the palm of your upper hand. The rotation makes it possible to bring the paddle around, ready for the next power stroke without taking the blade out of the water, it's a very nice stroke to know because with the paddle remaining in the water, the canoeist is in control throughout the entire stroke.

The Biscuit Mixing Method is a popular and easy way to make biscuits. Measure all ingredients accurately. Combine the dry ingredients together into a mixing bowl. Combine the liquid ingredients and chill. Cut in the chilled fat, using the paddle attachment of a stand mixer, food processor or by hand, using a pastry blender or your fingers. Continue until the mixture resembles a coarse cornmeal. Slowly add the liquid to the dry ingredients. Mix just until the ingredients are combined and a soft dough is formed; you may not need all of the liquid ones. Do not overmix...

The forward stroke is the same for both bow and stern paddlers. Of course there [are] all kinds of fancy techniques you can learn, but you should know that the upper hand on the paddle grips the handle on top, and does not hold the thing like... a golf club. The lower arm, holding the paddle's throat-does most of the work, so you might switch paddling sides once in a while to keep both arms evenly exercised.

Grate fired combustors. Grate-fired systems include both pile burners and spreader-stokers. Pile burners include the old-fashioned Dutch ovens(or Dietrich cells for bagasse and coffee grounds), Wellons cells, Lanb-Cargate wet cell or gasifier burners, and inclined grate systems. Spreader-stokers are distinguished by their feed mechanism, typically a windswept or pneumatic spout or paddle wheel located above the grate and the thin bed of fuel on the grate. The stoker mechanism spreads the fuel more or less uniformly across the grate. Grate fired systems may use flat or sloping grates, with inclined grates being the most severely sloping grate systems. Grates may be stationary or moving. They may be air cooled or water cooled. Ash removal from grates may be accomplished by moving arms, steam or air blowing systems, grate moving, or hand raking. Grate fired units may be refractory lined or waterwall furnaces, depending upon vendor and purpose.
