English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
CONT

Etriers can also be made out of stiff webbing without platforms... This is a variation of the earliest method of all, with webbing replacing the line... webbing étriers get hung up less than those with platforms, and make no noise. On the other hand, the feet do not as a rule slip into webbing étriers as easily as those with platforms.

CONT

A soft étrier is made entirely of webbing. It has 4-6 steps that are formed by loops in the webbing.

OBS

According to the director of the Carleton Village School, and the director of Equinox Adventures, webbing étriers are usually used in pairs.

CONT

A licence differs in its essentials from an assignment. A licence, even though exclusive, does not give the licensee all the rights of the patentee. A licence does not set up rights as between the licensee and the public, but only permits him to do acts that he would otherwise be prohibited from doing. He obtains merely a right of user. ... A licence prevents that from being unlawful which, but for the licence, would be unlawful; it is a consent by an owner of a right that another person should commit an act which, but for that licence, would be an infringement of the right of the person who gives the licence.

OBS

The spelling licence, though still often met with, has no justification in the case of the substantive. In the case of the verb, on the other hand, although the spelling licence is etymologically unobjectionable, license is supported by the analogy of the rule universally adopted in the similar pairs of related words, practice sb., practise vb, prophecy sb., prophecy vb.... Recent dictionaries, however, almost universally have license both for substantive and verb, either without alternative or in the first place.

DEF

DEF

The last raise permitted on a betting round.

CONT

In Fixed Limit games, each round of betting has a maximum number(three) of allowable raises, known as the cap. So, if a bet is made, that bet can only be raised three times, after which all players must call, or fold. However, if only two players remain in the hand the cap is increased, to a maximum of 5 raises. This rule is in effect for all the betting rounds, with the idea being to speed up play.

In a gyro, a vector representing the rotary motion applied to change the direction of the rotor axis. The torque vector represents the axis about which the applied force is felt.

CONT

As with the angular momentum the torque, or twist, produced by applying a force to a gyroscope, can be represented by a directed line segment--the torque vector. Destruction of prize. Since through adjudication by the Prize Courts the ownership of captured private enemy vessels becomes finally transferred to the belligerent whose forces made the capture, it is evident that after transfer the captured vessel as well as her cargo may be destroyed. On the other hand, it is likewise evident that, since a judgment of a Prize Court is necessary before the appropriation of the prize becomes final, a captured merchantman must not, as a rule, be destroyed on capture instead of being conducted to the port of adjudication. There are, however, exceptions to the rule, but no unanimity exists in theory or practice as regards those exceptions.

If his choice has been wrong, on the other hand, he is given an explanation of his error on the new page and as a rule is directed back to the original task page with the instruction to choose a better answer.
