When the "haul in" signal is given on the docking telegraph …, the operator pulls on the slack end of the rope that is wound loosely round the drum of the winch. This tightens the rope slightly on the drum and it grips the surface. The amount of tension on the free end of the rope is multiplied several hundred times and the resulting force is enough to move the entire ship, pulling it into the correct position. The [captain] signals with the docking telegraph or a hand held radio to tell the winch operator what to do and, by heaving in and paying out the ropes at each end of the ship, she can be positioned in exactly the right place regardless of the wind and waves. 1, record 3, English, - docking%20telegraph

The URCHIN2 underwater video system is a tethered camera system which telemeters video signals to the surface for recording and geo-referencing. The system can be hand deployed to a depth of 100 meters for a variety of marine benthic survey types, including substrate identification, habitat classification, and species enumeration. The name URCHIN is an acronym for "Underwater Reconnaissance for Coastal and Habitat Inventory. "... The current work is primarily focused on testing and documenting the newest version of the URCHIN2 for benthic habitat mapping and classification.... upgrades and testing include the implementation of a benthic positioning system such as "Trackpoint" or "Tracklink, "a slip-ring winch system for cable management, and a Thales Mobile Mapper receiver to provide survey grade positioning. 1, record 4, English, - survey%20grade%20positioning

1, record 4, French, - positionnement%20de%20pr%C3%A9cision

[Avalanche Victim Search. ] The initial search involves a fast scan of the entire area where victims might be found(that is, from the last seen point, within the perimeters of the avalanche, and in the deposition areas). It concentrates on likely areas of burial in addition to listening for transceiver signals and looking for clues on the surface. Initial searchers should be equipped with transceivers, probe, and shovel as well as a few wands if available. Do a visual search for clues on the surface(that is, hand, foot, clothing, and equipment). Call out occasionally and listen for responses from victims. Pull any items found out on the snow to see if a victim is attached. Mark the location of found items and bring them to the attention of the rescue leader. Listen carefully for transceiver signals in these locations.(If victims were not wearing transceivers or if is unknown whether transceivers were used, quickly probe the area around found items.) If a transceiver signal is found, carry out a transceiver search. If there is more than one person buried, the initial search continues to look for visual clues, etc. 2, record 6, English, - visual%20search%20for%20surface%20clues
