Counting coup was a relatively harmless act of bravery and war honor of the highest grade. Any blow struck against the enemy counted as a coup, but the most prestigious acts included touching an enemy warrior, with the hand or with a coup stick. The term is of French origin from the noun coup(pronounced/ku/) which means a hit, a blow or a strike. The expression can be seen as referring to "counting strikes". Coups were recorded by notches in the coup stick, or by feathers in the headdress of a warrior who was rewarded with them for an act of bravery. 1, record 5, English, - coup%20stick

1, record 5, French, - b%C3%A2ton%20%C3%A0%20coup

The words "offers violence" include any defiant gesture or act that, if completed, would end in violence but do not extend to an insulting or impertinent gesture or act from which violence could not result. For example, a non-commissioned member who throws down arms on parade, but in such a direction that they could not strike a superior officer, could not be deemed to have offered violence within the meaning of this section. On the other hand, the throwing of arms or the pointing of a loaded fire-arm at a superior would amount to offering violence. 1, record 6, English, - offer%20violence

1, record 6, French, - montrer%20de%20la%20violence
