The world’s first laboratory-grown beef burger was flipped out of a petri dish and into a frying pan on Monday, with food tasters declaring it tasted "close to meat." Grown in vitro from cattle stem cells at a cost of 250,000 euros ($332,000), the burger was cooked and eaten in front of television cameras to gain the greatest media coverage for the culmination of a five-year science experiment. Resembling a standard circular-shaped red meat patty, it was created by knitting together 20,000 strands of laboratory-grown protein, combined with other ingredients normally used in burgers, such as salt, breadcrumbs and egg powder. Red beet juice and saffron were added to give it color. 1, record 6, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The first laboratory-produced meat patty (cultured beef burger) presented in London on August 5, 2013, by Dr. Mark Post, a physiologist from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, was dubbed the "Frankenburger." The professor and his colleagues produced the meat-like substance by cultivating muscle tissue from cow stem cells in fetal serum and other growth-promoting materials (vitamines, amino acids, growth hormones, sugar, etc.). The laboratory-grown meat at this stage of development is prohibitively expensive, but might one day become a substitute for "real" meat. The product needs to be enhanced to improve its texture, taste and appearance. Some scientists predict that cultured meat might be commercially available within a decade. Others say that it will be possible to grow it in one’s own kitchen within 20 years. 13, record 6, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 2 OBS
The development of meat substitutes is praised on ethical grounds by animal rights or welfare activists since these products have the potential to greatly reduce the inhumane raising and slaughtering of animals raised for meat. Environmentalists, economists and scientists support these products since they might one day be a cost-effective means of meeting world demands for meat, while greatly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste, as well as the use of water, farmland and animal feed that make intensive animal farming unsustainable. On the other hand, natural food advocates have serious doubts concerning ingredients needed to grow and enhance these products, and the long term safety of their consumption; and meat industry proponents argue that the technology still requires stem cell donors(the cells from a single donor cannot replicate indefinitely) and that the product remains a far cry from "real" meat. Only time will tell if these products will, in a perhaps not so distant future, entirely replace, or only supplement, the meat industry. 13, record 6, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 3 OBS
cultured beef hamburger: A "hamburger" is a minced beef patty. Terms such as "cultured beef hamburger" could therefore be considered pleonastic. The term "burger" is the shortened form of "hamburger." While burgers are traditionally made of beef, non-beef burgers have become popular, and modifiers such as "veggie," "tuna," "chicken," "nut," and "soya" are used to describe them. Given this relatively new reality, the use of seemingly pleonastic terms such as "cultured beef burger" may be justified. 13, record 6, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 4 OBS
The combination of terms such as "hamburger," "cultured," "laboratory," "in vitro" and their short forms to create neologisms designating this product yields an impressive number of synonyms. This will remain the case as long as terminology used to describe this relatively new concept is not well established. 13, record 6, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 5 OBS
synthetic hamburger; artificial hamburger: The terms "synthetic meat" and "artificial meat" designate products that imitate meat but that are not necessarily laboratory-grown from animal cells. Hence, the use of qualifiers such as "synthetic" and "artificial" might lead to confuse a cultured hamburger with, for example, a soy-based burger. 13, record 6, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 6 OBS
Terms such as "Frankenburger" that do not include the modifier "beef" might very well be used some day to designate similar laboratory-grown products made from animal cells other than beef. 13, record 6, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger

Several thread suppliers sell spools of monofilament thread, which is very fine and comes in either nylon or polyester. Many quilters prefer polyester monofilament thread because it doesn’t stretch as much as the nylon, and therefore isn’t as likely to tangle. In addition, nylon thread doesn’t do well in heat and it may discolor over time. Still, other quilters choose nylon [invisible] thread for its performance and say it looks the most like hand quilting. 4, record 10, English, - invisible%20thread

Quantum computing is an area of computing focused on developing computer technology based on the principles of quantum theory... One of the basic heads of damages in contract and tort. Now a term of art with no precise difference between pain on the one hand and suffering on the other. It has been suggested that pain is the immediately felt effect on the nerves and brain as a consequence of some lesion or injury to part of the body, while suffering is distress that is not felt directly as being connected with any bodily condition. It includes fright at the time of injury, fear of future incapacity, possible death, insanity or inability to make a living. 2, record 22, English, - pain%20and%20suffering

At one time, there was a major distinction between securities firms. These were investment dealers on the one hand and stock brokers on the other, and individual securities firms tended to specialize as one or the other. This distinction has largely disappeared. In simple terms, an investment dealer acts as principal in securities transactions while a stock broker acts as agent. A securities firm acting as a dealer or principal owns the securities that are sold to or bought from investors. Thus, the securities are part of the firm's inventory. The difference between buying and selling prices is the dealer's gross profit or loss. On the other hand, the stock broker, as an agent, acts on behalf of the buyer or seller but does not own the securities. 6, record 23, English, - stockbroker

1, record 24, French, - objet%20participatif

There have been some decisions to the contrary, but generally it seems that a payment of a debt to a foreign domiciliary executor or administrator discharges the obligation where at the time there was no representative in the state of the domicil of the debtor... On the other hand, payment of a debt to a foreign executor or administrator does not operate as a discharge where there is at the time a local executor or administrator, unless, perhaps, the person paying did not have actual notice of the appointment of a local representative.("American Jurisprudence", 2nd ed., v. 31, 1967, p. 287) 1, record 33, English, - local%20executor

Audiometry provides a more precise measurement of hearing. Air conduction is tested by wearing earphones attached to the audiometer. Pure tones of controlled intensity are delivered to one ear at a time. The patient is asked to raise a hand, press a button, or otherwise indicate when he hears a sound. The minimum intensity(volume) required to hear each tone is graphed. An attachment called a bone oscillator is placed against the bone behind each ear(mastoid bone) to test bone conduction. 3, record 34, English, - audiometry

Skimboarding(or skimming) is a sport which involves riding a board on an outgoing wave.... Unlike surfing, skimboarding starts on the beach. The skimboarder stands within running distance from the point of entry into the water with the skimboard in hand and waits for a wave. As the desired wave approaches, the skimboarder runs towards the water. Depending on conditions, the board is dropped on a thin layer of water from a receding wave or on the thicker water in front of the wave. Then he or she runs onto the board one foot at a time using a technique known as the "One-Step" while properly positioning the feet and maintaining balance towards the centre of the board. 4, record 48, English, - skimboarding

2, record 52, French, - gyroscope%20%C3%A0%20trois%20cadres

It is estimated that at one time 90% of New York City's Italian population was blackmailed by letters threatening death and marked with a black hand. Famous incidents associated with the Black Hand include the murder(1890) in New Orleans of chief of police Daniel Hennessy and the shooting(1909), in Palermo, Italy, of Lt. Joseph Petrosino of the New York City police. 2, record 55, English, - Black%20Hand

The society was so named because those who did not comply with its demands received notes imprinted with a black hand to warn them of terrible reprisals. Many Italians were expected to give up portions of their wages to this criminal group, and if they didn’t, they were repeatedly harassed and even killed. 3, record 55, English, - Black%20Hand

A vacuum-splint provides a quick form-fitting limb and/or spine immobilization during rescue and transportation to medical facilities.... When the valve is open, internal pressure is equal to atmospheric pressure allowing the device to be wrapped around the body part to be immobilized. Next, a hand vacuum pump is attached to the valve and a vacuum is created. This brings the walls of the device down on polystyrene beads internally which compress and form fit to whatever it is initially wrapped around. At the same time it becomes extremely rigid and can no longer be manipulated until the valve is open again allowing internal pressure to return allowing removal of the device. 1, record 56, English, - vacuum%20splint

This feast is celebrated in the Latin Church on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday to solemnly commemorate the institution of the Holy Eucharist. The instrument in the hand of Divine Providence was St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon, in Belgium. She was born in 1193 at Retines near Liège. Orphaned at an early age, she was educated by the Augustinian nuns of Mont Cornillon. Here she in time made her religious profession and later became superioress. Intrigues of various kinds several times drove her from her convent. She died 5 April, 1258, at the House of the Cistercian nuns at Fosses, and was buried at Villiers. Juliana, from her early youth, had a great veneration for the Blessed Sacrement, and always longed for a special feast in its honour. This desire is said to have been increased by a vision of the Church under the appearance of the full moon having one dark spot, which signified the absence of such a solemnity. She made known her ideas to Robert de Thorete, then Bishop of Liège, to the learned Dominican Hugh, later cardinal legate in the Netherlands, and to Jacques Pantaléon, at that time Archedeacon of Liège, afterwards Bishop of Verdun, Patriarch of Jerusalem and finally Pope Urban IV. 1, record 57, English, - Corpus%20Christi

Daily Severity Rating-A numerical measure, based on the Fire Weather Index(FWI), specifically designed for averaging, either for any desired period of time(e. g. week, month, year) at a single fire weather station or spatially over a number of stations. The FWI itself, on the other hand, is not considered suitable for averaging, and should be used as its single daily value only. The DSR averaged over a whole fire season is termed the Seasonal Severity Rating(SSR) which can be used as an objective measure for comparing fire weather severity from one season to the next, or the fire climate of one region with another. 2, record 58, English, - seasonal%20severity%20rating

5, record 59, French, - chronom%C3%A8tre

Dextre [Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator] is designed so that only one arm can move at a time in order to avoid self-collision, achieve greater stability and maintain operational similarity with Canadarm2. The greater stability is provided by the immobile arm, which is first commanded to anchor Dextre to an ISS [International Space Station] stabilization point. At the tip of each arm, we find a "hand", known technically as the Orbital Replacement Unit/Tool Changeout Mechanism(OTCM). The OTCM consists of a set of parallel retractable jaws, which serve to grip payloads and tools. Each OTCM is also equipped with a retractable motorized socket wrench to mate and demate mechanisms on-orbit, as well as lights and a black and white camera. Dextre lower body is equipped with a pair of pan/tilt colour cameras that allow astronauts aboard the ISS, and engineers on the ground, to monitor the task, which is out of direct eyesight. 1, record 64, English, - orbital%20replacement%20unit%2Ftool%20changeout%20mechanism

It is functionally symmetrical, with each end supporting an "End Effector" that works either as a hand for the robot or as a base from which the arm can operate. ERA has seven joints(in order : roll, yaw, pitch, pitch, pitch, yaw, roll), of which six can operate at any one time. This configuration allows ERA to relocate itself on to different "Basepoints" on the SPP [Science Power Platform] using an End-Effector-mounted camera to locate a Basepoint accurately. 2, record 65, English, - basepoint

L'ERA, ou European Robotic Arm. [...] 3, record 65, French, - point%20d%27ancrage

There is nothing mysterious about selling short. I simply put in an order to my broker in which I agree, in return for a certain price now, to deliver at some later date an amount of grain. Bellanet is an international initiative with a mission to increase the impact of development activities through greater collaboration. Collaboration is enhanced by more effective use of information and communication technologies(ICTs). At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro the world was faced with the fact that, in spite of massive and accelerating problems of poverty and environmental degradation in developing countries, levels of spending on development assistance were stagnant or declining among many donor nations, and were likely to remain so for a long time. During follow-up meetings, a number of strategies were discussed. One such meeting took place in Bellagio, Italy(from which the name "Bellanet" was coined), where senior representatives of twenty development agencies concluded that one response to the challenges at hand was to increase the impact and relevance of donor actions through greater collaboration. A subgroup(the World Bank, the MacArthur Foundation, SAREC [Swedish Agency for Research Co-operation with Developing Countries], and IDRC [The International Development Research Centre] was asked to investigate options. A proposal for action was formulated and, at a second Bellagio meeting in late 1994, the formation of Bellanet was endorsed. Bellanet was given a mandate to promote collaboration through the use of emerging information and communication technologies(ICTs). In early 1995 Bellanet officially started with the first meeting of the Bellanet International Steering Committee(BISC) and the formation of the Bellanet International Secretariat established at the International Development Research Centre(IDRC), a federal organization established in Ottawa, Ontario. 1, record 76, English, - Bellanet%20Initiative

A retroactive statute is one that operates backwards, i. e., that is operative as of a time prior to its enactment, either by being deemed to have come into force at a time prior to its enactment(e. g., budgetary measures) or by being expressed to be operative with respect to past transactions as of a past time(e. g., acts of indemnity). A retroactive statute is easier to recognize because the retroactivity is usually express. A retrospective statute, on the other hand, changes the law only for the future but looks backward by attaching new consequences to completed transactions. it thus opens up closed transactions and changes their consequences as of the future. 1, record 83, English, - retrospective%20statute

Just as one distinguishes between acute and chronic exposure, so must one also distinguish between chronic effects. Acute effects can be defined as those that occur or develop rapidly after a single administration of a substance, while chronic effects are those that are manifest after the elapse of some time.... A single, "acute" exposure to a material(e. g., beryllium) produces a chronic effect, one that takes some time to become manifest. On the other hand, one can find substances that yield acute effects on each of a series of exposures but fail to produce chronic effects. So-called subacute effects are qualitatively identical to acute effects but are less intense. They can be produced by repeated exposure over a short period of time. 1, record 84, English, - subacute%20effect

Suppose you blindfold a man and ask him to hold out his hand, palm up. Now place a weight on his palm; he will certainly notice it. As you add more units of weight, he notices their addition too. But after his palm is carrying a good deal of weight, you can add just as big a weight as you did in the beginning, and yet this time he will reply that he is not conscious of any addition. In other words, the greater the total weight he is already carrying, the less will be the effect of an extra or marginal unit of weight. 1, record 91, English, - marginal%20unit
