When the "haul in" signal is given on the docking telegraph …, the operator pulls on the slack end of the rope that is wound loosely round the drum of the winch. This tightens the rope slightly on the drum and it grips the surface. The amount of tension on the free end of the rope is multiplied several hundred times and the resulting force is enough to move the entire ship, pulling it into the correct position. The [captain] signals with the docking telegraph or a hand held radio to tell the winch operator what to do and, by heaving in and paying out the ropes at each end of the ship, she can be positioned in exactly the right place regardless of the wind and waves.

The URCHIN2 underwater video system is a tethered camera system which telemeters video signals to the surface for recording and geo-referencing. The system can be hand deployed to a depth of 100 meters for a variety of marine benthic survey types, including substrate identification, habitat classification, and species enumeration. The name URCHIN is an acronym for "Underwater Reconnaissance for Coastal and Habitat Inventory. "... The current work is primarily focused on testing and documenting the newest version of the URCHIN2 for benthic habitat mapping and classification.... upgrades and testing include the implementation of a benthic positioning system such as "Trackpoint" or "Tracklink, "a slip-ring winch system for cable management, and a Thales Mobile Mapper receiver to provide survey grade positioning.

Mobile work platforms come in various shapes, sizes, and price categories, including lightweight, one-man push-around models; manually propelled or towable scissors-type units; and large, self-propelled booms that reach out 80 ft or more. The sliding-frame elevating platform is the simplest, most economical version of a one-man push-around towable unit. It consists of a railed platform affixed to a frame that slides up or down on a vertical mast set on a mobile base. The platform can be raised or lowered mechanically by a hand crank winch and cable suspension system. Or, the units can be powered up and down hydraulically or by compressed air. Power sources can be AC or DC electric motors or plant air.

One of the smallest [oceanographic winches] is the bathythermograph winch. It is used to lower the bathythermograph, a recording thermometer capable of registering temperature against depth down to 900 feet. In shallow water the winch, with a specially designed device called a "scoopfish", takes small bottom samples. Mechanical current meters and vertical hand plankton nets are lowered from the bathythermograph winch.
