One company involved in "factory of the future" programs is the Vought Aero Products Division(APD) of LTV which, in July 1984, brought into operation a computer-controlled Flexible Machining Cell(FMC) to machine parts needed for the aft and aft-intermediate fuselage sections of the B-1B... The system was to be capable of high machine utilisation with programming flexibility to cope with batch sizes down to one; unmanned operation; automated material handling; automated inspection of finished parts; and computer scheduling of the cell' s activities. 1, record 3, English, - flexible%20machining%20cell

1, record 3, French, - cellule%20d%27usinage%20souple

Commercial reprocessing plants contain dissolvers based on one of two principles : batch operation or continuous operation using an apparatus with rotating mechanical parts. In a typical batch dissolver the fuel is sheared into a large basket which is immersed in the dissolver vessel. After the fuel has been leached, the basket is removed from the dissolver using a crane and then tipped to transfer the hulls and other debris to the encapsulation plant. This system requires extensive mechanical handling of the dissolver basket which is heavy and needs a large amount of maintainable equipment in the shielded dissolver cell. 1, record 4, English, - batch%20dissolver

The Biorack is being used during this nine-day mission to study the effects of radiation and the absence of gravity(i. e. microgravity) on plant, fungus, tissue and cell growth. This research will help to determine the effects of long-duration spaceflight on organisms and prepare for the International Space Station... The Biorack integrates several scientific facilities in a single rack-highly desirable given the limited room available onboard a spaceflight. It offers incubators that permit experiments to be performed in different temperature controlled environments; simulated 1 g that allows investigators to distinguish between effects induced by gravity and microgravity; and a "glovebox" or protected workspace for specimen handling. 2, record 5, English, - Biorack
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 CONT
It [Biorack] consists of two incubators with centrifuges, a glovebox, a refrigerator and a freezer. Experiments that used the Biorack concentrated on performing cell culture research to investigate the effects of microgravity on human bones and blood. 3, record 5, English, - Biorack
