Subject field(s)
  • Skydiving, Paragliding and Hang Gliding
DEF

A person who engages in hang-gliding.

CONT

The only way to become a good hang glider pilot is to fly and fly and fly in controlled/supervised conditions so that you generate the proper habits that make it virtually impossible for you to behave incorrectly. These "habits" are both mental and physical. Every one of us is unique and learns in somewhat different manners. Hang glider pilots fly using senses not instruments and each of us take different amounts of time to develop the use of and coordination of those senses to become a safe/good pilot.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Sports Equipment and Accessories
  • Skydiving, Paragliding and Hang Gliding
DEF

A large, flat, usually delta-shaped motorless aircraft with an attached harness or seat, designed to carry a person or two people through the air for a short while.

CONT

Hang gliders can be rigid or semi-rigid. Semi-rigid, which is the most common type, have aluminium spars and battens in their wings, but are covered in a tight sheath of Dacron cloth. Rigid hang gliders are made of hard, composite materials such as glass fibre and are becoming increasingly popular. In both cases, the pilot is suspended in a harness beneath the glider in a face down position and controls the direction and speed by moving a triangular control frame to shift his or her weight beneath the wing.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Équipement et accessoires de sport
  • Parachutisme, parapente et deltaplane
CONT

Canadian Pilotage Charts are designed primarily for visual navigation and are most useful during flights at lower altitude and at slower speeds. Canadian Pilotage Charts have been replaced by VFR [Visual Flight Rules] Navigation Charts for the southern and some northern regions of Canada and for the Arctic Islands. They are still used in some northern areas of continental Canada but most hang glider pilots will probably never see one. They have a scale of 1 : 500, 000.
