canoe cup... [Canadian] Voyageurs and hunters travelling by canoe sometimes carried cups carved from the burls of tree trunks. These were profusely decorated with incised motifs, such as a four-leaf clover, a basket of flowers, a beaver, a snake, a mermaid and fish, a boat, or hearts. The small barrel attached to the cup with string serves as a toggle for hanging the cup from the belt.

Petite tasse sculptée à partir de nœuds de troncs d'arbres par les chasseurs et voyageurs canadiens et employée pour étancher leur soif au cours de leurs explorations en canot au dix-neuvième et au début du vingtième siècle, et qu'ils portaient attachée par une lanière de cuir à leur ceinturon.

Les tasses de voyageur sont devenues des objets de collection prisés car elles étaient pour la plupart décorées de motifs gravés tels que fleurs, castors, poissons, serpents, etc. On dénote toutefois au cours du vingtième siècle une production amérindienne de ces articles plus axée sur le marché touristique.
