HANGING BELAY [3 records]

Record 1 2017-11-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
DEF

The site chosen for a belay anchor, where the belay is made.

CONT

A belay station may be a comfortable ledge, a small foot stance or a hanging belay...

CONT

The belay station may be a ledge, but often you won’t be so lucky: it will consist of several anchors to which you connect yourself and your hauling system.

OBS

Belay station ... Also called belay stance.

OBS

Although some sources consider a belay stance to be a belay station, this is imprecise. A belay station may be the site of a hanging belay consisting of anchors only while a belay stance can only be a ledge.

DEF

Record 2 2012-01-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ropemaking
  • Mountain Sports
CONT

The mule knot is a load-releasable knot that allows you to tie off an injured climber to your belay device so you can free your hands to perform a belay escape. You can also use the mule knot to tie off a hanging climber so you don’t have to hold his or her weight.

CONT

The mule knot to lock the rope off. ... Pass a bight of dead rope (i.e. the one that is not under tension) through the belay carabiner to form a loop. Pass your hand through this loop and pull another bight through, so as to make a second loop. Tighten the loop by gently easing rope through the belay plate, whilst simultaneously pulling the loop backwards.

Record 3 1995-04-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
CONT

... so much climbing is done on steep walls with minuscule belay stances or hanging belays(where the belayer is actually supported by his anchors), the belay anchor seems all important.

CONT

Harnesses are also useful for hanging belays, but many climbers carry extremely lightweight and compact belay seat("butt bag") or else improvise with runners....

OBS

A hanging belay should be located where protection is available immediately above or where the climbing to the first protection is relatively easy.

CONT

Mais avez-vous songé à votre situation si, arrivé au bout d'un rappel à un relais pendu en pleine paroi vous n'arrivez pas à récupérer votre corde qui a eu la mauvaise idée de se coincer dans une fissure?
