Subject field(s)
  • Atomic Physics
CONT

The 1930s also produced the beginnings of what is known as the Standard Solar Model, an explanation by the young German refugee physicist Hans Bethe of how stars like the sun generate their energy. Thermonuclear fusion of hydrogen in the solar core is the key reaction according to this model, with about one percent of the energy being released in the form of electron neutrinos.

Domaine(s)
  • Physique atomique
CONT

A chemical product which appears under the form of a white, crystalline solid, is soluble in acetone, is insoluble in water, alcohol, carbon tetrachloride, and carbon disulfide, is slightly soluble in methanol and ether, is derived by reaction of hexamethylenetetramine with concentrated nitric acid, is toxic by inhalation and skin contact, and, being 1.5 times as powerful as TNT, is used as an explosive, for example as the main charge in jet-perforating guns.

OBS

... powerful explosive, discovered by Hans Henning of Germany in 1899 but not used until World War II..., RDX was produced on a large scale in the United States by a secret process developed in the United States and Canada. The name RDX was coined by the British as a contraction of Research Department Explosive, and this name was accepted in the United States. The Germans called it Hexogen, and the Italians called it T4.

DEF

... the normalized winter pressure differential between the Icelandic Low and the Azores High centers of action.

CONT

Originally described in the diaries of the missionary Hans Egede Saabye as a see-saw in temperature between Greenland and Denmark(Saabye, 1942), the NAO was later defined by Sir Gilbert Walker as "the tendency for pressure to be low near Iceland in winter when it is high near the Azores and south-west Europe"(Walker, 1924; Walker and Bliss, 1932). Accounting for more than 1/3 of the total variance of the sea level pressure(SLP) field over the North Atlantic, the NAO is most pronounced during the winter months(December through March) due to an increased sea air temperature contrast(Barnston and Livezey, 1987).

OBS

Low (high) NAO index values occur when sea level pressure is above (below) average in the vicinity of the subpolar Icelandic Low and below (above) average near the subtropical Azores High pressure cell.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Climatologie
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

In 1971, P&O entered into a joint management arrangement when they purchased Brisbane Cool Store at Eagle Farm. This was the first "high rise" cold store in Australia, storing warehoused general cold storage products including frozen export cartoned meat; poultry; frozen orange juice concentrate; and chilled peanuts. In 1978, P&O bought out its partner and operated the "high rise" store as a General Public Cold Store up to 1989 when the complex was sold to Hans Smallgoods.

St. Hans Day falls every year on the same day, 24 June, with St. Hans Night celebrated the night before on the 23rd. In Christian belief, it celebrates the birthday of St. Hans, otherwise known as St. Johannes, the Danish name for St. John the Baptist. The tradition, of course, runs far deeper than that, for St. Hans falls almost exactly at the same time as the longest day of the year, 21 June, or the summer solstice.

The Canterbury Ring Laser, built in the Department of Physics principally by Morrie Poulton and Clive Rowe under the guidance of Professor Hans Bilger of Oklahoma State University, is a large laser gyroscope with an unusually high frequency resolution... The Canterbury ring system has a nearly square optical cavity with an area of 0. 7547 square metres and a perimeter of 3. 477 m(and so a free spectral range of 86. 22 MHz).

OBS

Specialized configurations - a triple XYZ axis triangular cavity laser in a solid glass block for an optical ring laser gyro, for example - also exist but are much much less common - you probably won’t find one of these at a local flea market!

CONT
