HARD BRAKING [6 records]

Record 1 2017-11-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Maneuvers
  • Airport Runways and Areas
OBS

When hard braking is applied for slowing down or stopping after an aborted takeoff or emergency stop situation, the tire is locked up and can’t rotate, causing rapid heat buildup. When the tire begins to smoke, rubber debris build up under the tire. As the skid continues, more and more debris cause a barrier to form against the water, preventing it from escaping past the tire. A seal has now been created... heating the water under the tire to a point where steam exists. The steam is strong enough to support the tire and prevent runway contact. Should the skid continue, the tire enters reverted rubber state as more heat, steam and rubber debris continue the process.

Key term(s)
  • rubber-reverted aquaplanning

French

Domaine(s)
  • Manœuvres d'aéronefs
  • Pistes et aires d'aéroport
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Braking Systems (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
CONT

... the rear brakes would tend to lock during hard braking.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Freins (Véhicules automobiles et bicyclettes)
CONT

Record 3 2004-01-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Driving (Road Vehicles)
CONT

Front-wheel skids are caused by hard braking or acceleration and by entering a curve too fast. When the front wheels lose traction, you lose steering ability.

Key term(s)
  • front wheel skid

French

Domaine(s)
  • Conduite automobile
CONT

Record 4 2002-11-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Driving (Road Vehicles)
OBS

Jack-rabbit starts and hard braking can increase fuel consumption by close to 40 percent.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Conduite automobile
OBS

  • Suspension Systems (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
CONT

The... system has several advantages over the strut-type rear suspension it replaces : it maintains optimal suspension alignment under all driving conditions for improved ride and stability-particularly at higher speeds and during hard braking-and improves steering responsiveness.
