Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
CONT

Glaze and rime ice are names given to the ice that forms on an airplane’s windshield, its propeller and other aerodynamic surfaces as an airplane flies through supercooled rain droplets.

CONT

The rain droplets fall through the cold layer and reach the ground as supercooled liquid (water droplets at a temperature below 0°C), or, as a mixture of liquid and ice. As they land on cold objects such as tree branches, hydro lines, etc. the supercooled rain droplets spread out and freeze almost immediately, forming a smooth thin layer of ice ...

CONT

So supercooled raindrops stay liquid until they hit something hard, when they turn into a dangerous and beautiful layer of clear ice, covering roads, wires, trees, and buildings.

OBS

supercooled raindrops; supercooled rain droplets: terms rarely used in the singular (supercooled raindrop; supercooled rain droplet).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Waste Management
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
CONT

The third category of waste, that with hazardous lifetimes greater than 500 years, will continue to be stored until a suitable repository can be justified economically.

CONT

The selection of an appropriate repository will depend primarily on local geological, hydrological, topographic and climatic conditions at the site. In general above-ground structures will be preferred where there is groundwater close to the earth surface or where excavation of pits or trenches would be difficult owing to hard bedrock close to the surface. On the other hand, in terrains with favourable properties, preference should be given to subsurface modules because of better shielding, easier handling during emplacement, simpler backfilling and covering with earth materials, and reduced potential for erosion.

CONT

Underground repository for radioactive waste.

OBS

See also "disposal site", and "final repository (or disposal site)".

  • Gestion des déchets
  • Déchets nucléaires
  • Tiroir - Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire
CONT
