HARD CRACK [11 records]

Record 1 2024-05-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Drugs and Drug Addiction
CONT

The stepping-stone theory refers to a process by which users move from soft drugs such as marijuana to hard drugs such as crack or cocaine.

OBS

As opposed to the stepping-stone theory that considered cannabis use as an inevitable first step to harder drugs, supporters of the gateway hypothesis argue that this isn’t always the case.

Universal entry(ies)
CONT

The sweet granadilla is the common species of Passiflora ranging from central Mexico through Central America and western South America, through western Bolivia to south-central Peru.

OBS

The epicarp is a hard sclerophyllous tissue that gives the [sweet granadilla] fruit a firm texture and brittle nature and will crack rather than wrinkle as yellow [or purple] passionfruit does when it ripens or pressure is applied.

OBS

yellow passionfruit: common name also used to refer to the species Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Arboriculture fruitière
  • Botanique
Entrée(s) universelle(s)
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
DEF

The insertion of piton into a crack by means of a hammer or by hands.

CONT

In hard, solid rock select a crack wide enough to admit one third to one half of the piton shaft before driving the piton in. The placing of pitons in soft, rotten rock is often not practical. When this type of rock must be scaled, loose rock from the crack should be removed before setting the piton.

CONT

Many of the skills of piton placing can be gained only by practice, and once again an occasional hour spent experimenting with pegs on a boulder can give valuable knowledge.

CONT

Placing Pitons : The placement of pitons is normally the function of the leader... Ideally, a piton should be inserted into a crack 1/2 to 2/3 of its length and driven hard to the hilt. A ringing sound, steadily increasing in pitch, usually indicates a solid piton.

OBS

Using pitons is known as "pegging" and taking them out is called "de-pegging". This English word is gradually replacing the French one in Britain.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sports de montagne
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Road Construction
CONT

... conventional steel drum rollers cause cracks in pavements during compaction. This phenomenon is called "roller checking", and is caused by the incompatibility of the hard, round steel drum and the soft, flat asphalt pavement. Because the steel drums are round, only a very small area of contact is presented to the asphalt surface for compaction. As the roller travels along the pavement, the asphalt in front of the roller is pushed ahead, causing a pulling force in the asphalt behind the drum. This pushing and pulling action causes the asphalt to crack.

Subject field(s)
  • Cutting and Trimming (Machine-Tooling)
CONT

A new process, "abrasive waterjet cutting", was created by the introduction of abrasive particles into the waterjet, greatly increasing capabilities. The addition of abrasives to the waterjet stream expands cutting capability to almost any material known to man and makes it one of the most versatile tools in use today.... Abrasive waterjet is rapidly finding use in cutting hard, dense material such as glass, composites, metals, and fired ceramics. These materials are difficult to cut by older, conventional processes because they tend to fray, crack, splinter, shatter, or show heat effects.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Découpage et taillage (Usinage)
CONT

When a bomb is detonated in hard rock, the immediately surrounding medium will flow plastically, crack and deform in a non-linear way; as the stresses imposed by the propagating shock decay to a certain "critical stress" level, elastic propagation begins.
