Bobbing for apples is an old party game that can still be a lot of fun at parties or for other groups of children. The traditional version requires a tub or large basin of water. A number of apples are put in the water to float. One by one, the children and adults hold their hands behind their backs and try to catch an apple with their teeth. The apples all move around and make it hard to set your teeth into. Everyone who plays ends up with a wet face and maybe some damp clothes, and a lot of giggles. 2, record 6, English, - bobbing%20for%20apples

Hang gliders can be rigid or semi-rigid. Semi-rigid, which is the most common type, have aluminium spars and battens in their wings, but are covered in a tight sheath of Dacron cloth. Rigid hang gliders are made of hard, composite materials such as glass fibre and are becoming increasingly popular. In both cases, the pilot is suspended in a harness beneath the glider in a face down position and controls the direction and speed by moving a triangular control frame to shift his or her weight beneath the wing. 3, record 7, English, - hang%20glider

A cutter-loader based on the plough principle and designed to cut coal which is too hard for the ordinary plough. Two vertical blades, fitted one at each end of the machine, carry cutting picks which shear the coal from the face by an oscillating motion. The machine is hauled backward and forward along the face by a chain haulage mounted on the tail end of the conveyor. The conveyor and slicer are held up to the coal by pneumatic rams spaced along the goaf side of the conveyor. The sheared coal is forced from the face by the wedge shape of the machine and is loaded on to the armoured conveyor by means of specially shaped ramps. The machine has been designed for seams with a minimum thickness of 4 ft and has a maximum cutting depth of 14 in. 4, record 10, English, - Huwood%20slicer

Rapid plows. The Loebbehobel is a rapid plow which is equipped with three or four protruding picks or bits. The plow is double-ended and cuts as it traverses in each direction along the face. The machine normally travels at a speed of about 75 ft/min and takes a slice of coal 3-4 in. thick off the face at each pass. It is pulled to and fro by an endless chain which is driven by the gearheads at each end of the armored conveyor. Maximum pulling force is about 20 tons. This machine is capable of working in seams 1 ft 8 in. thick up to 7 ft thick and can produce, load, and deliver to a gate conveyor from 1. 5 to 5 tons/min. The plow works well in seams which are soft or are hard but friable but will not work well in coal which is "tough" or "woody". 1, record 13, English, - rapid%20plow
